In the mist of power outages and evacuation alerts, The Help was able to stay on top of the box office (as we predicted). But overall, this weekend hurt the studios harder than the hurricane hit the cities. This weekend was the release of big pictures like Colombiana and Guillermo Del Toro‘s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark – but neither were able to known down the leader. The Help stayed on top with $14.3 million. The new Weinstein picture Our Idiot Brother came in fifth with $6.5 million.

dbaotd bailee shower8 27 11 Dont Be Afraid of the Dark: Movie Review

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is an odd title for a film that gives you nothing but good reason to be afraid of the dark, but I guess that’s all part of the fun of it! There is a lot about this film that makes it a cliched horror film, the only difference is that there are some impressive A-list actors, interesting new monsters and a splash of Guillermo del Toro (interview) from time to time. The problem is, that this film asks you to suspend your beliefs in the wrong ways. Believing that monsters exists in basement and are after your teeth — awesome! Buying that human beings act the way they do in this move — failed movie magic. There were a lot of good things about this movie, but it loses its way about halfway in, making it a horror film that will likely not be remember. Find out why…

It’s bad the battle for least embarassing, as three new releases are going to try (and most likely fail) to take the top spot from The Help, which won last weekend. This week brings Our Idiot Brother, Colombiana, and Don’t Be Afraid of the Darkto wide release, and – as it’s the end of the summer – they are all hoping that low competition and low expectations will help them to make modest profits. Columbiana stars Zoe Saldana and with it, she has the largest role for a female person of color this summer. Check out our predictions…

gdeltotrcc 2011 Comic Con 2011: Guillermo del Toro Talks Mountains of Madness, Dont Be Afraid of the Dark, Hellboy 3 and his love of Hall H

We had a chance to sit down once again with one of our favorites over at ScreenCrave and he had quite a lot to say about many projects in question as well as his love for filmmaking and film-watching. Mr. Guillermo del Toro himself who as well as partaking in almost every single panel at Comic-Con this year with a bad back was also willing to talk more intimately with the press, though, he see’s all of his fans in Hall H as his personally friends.

During our interview about his upcoming release Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark he also spoke many of the questions that we’ve been asking about, mainly Mountains of Madness (which he’ll never give up on and had the ring to prove!) and could possibly still be moved to do Hellboy 3 (as long as Ron Perlman can do it and isn’t too old). Check it our below…

Guillermo Del Toro‘s been up for a number of different projects since 2008′s Hellboy II, but nothing has come together. And though he’s been attached to a number of different projects (and seems to be going forward with Pacific Rim), as a producer he’s kept himself busy. He’s been consulting with DreamWorks on their animated films, and was the co-writer and producer of the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark remake, which was directed by newcomer Troy Nixley. Now there’s a trailer for the film, which comes out August 26, and features Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce. Check it out..

Guillermo del Toro came out of hiding from those angry Hobbit fans to support Troy Nixey, the director of his upcoming feature, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Del Toro went back to his horror roots and wrote and produced the film. He was on hand at the Comic-Con press conference to discuss his remake of the 1973 made for TV movie of the same name.

The film’s about a girl who moves in with her dad and his girlfriend, only to discover that they’re sharing their home with some “devilish creatures.” It’s no surprise that while the the topic of fear was at hand and del Toro, being the amazing storyteller that he is, had a rather humorous tale to tell about his own fears and how he’s faced them.
