We watch a lot of movie trailers here at ScreenCrave, and, as we inch closer to summer with its ever-increasing torrent of new films, we’re seeing more and more previews with each passing day. As we do so, we can’t help but notice some similarities, repetitions, and clichés among them. Here at Trailer Park, we’ll be offering a rundown of those clichés, where they come from, and which trailers share them. This week, we’ll be breaking down: The Sci-Fi Movie Trailer.

Neill Blomkamp is turning down offers left and right. The South African newcomer recently made a name for himself with his mid-budget sci-fi alien film District 9. Now, Blomkamp is being offered films with huge budgets, however, he’s not having it. In a recent interview with LA Times‘ Hero Complex writer Geoff Boucher, the Johannesburg native shared his ideas about big-budget filmmaking, the Hollywood Machine, and a possible sequel for District 9.

Following the suit of Oscar, the Producers Guild has expanded their nominee list to ten films this year, and that move has yielded a few surprises.
Sci-Fi crowd favorites Star Trek and District 9 found their way onto the Guild’s shortlist along with the requisite cadre of prestige pictures and critical darlings to round out the rest of the top ten. Notably absent from the list is Nine, whose Oscar hopes are fading fast.
Will Oscar follow the PGA’s lead and use its ten slots to throw in a few movies that audiences liked as well as critics? We’ll have to wait and see.
Check out all the nominees below. . .

Finally a number one film to be excited about. There is no doubt that many critics thought that District 9 was the best film of the summer, but it was yet to be seen if audiences would respond. Everything from the first time director (Neill Blomkamp) and never before seen star (Sharlto Copley) to the interesting marketing campaign with alien posters all over LA and NY, made this film worth watching, but not necessarily a guarantee. It wasn’t clear if they were going to be able to pull it off at the box office, but luckily, they were!

After seeing the posters, the trailers, the image of an alien-like figure with its spaceship, the time has come; Neill Bloomkamp‘s District 9 comes out this week. The sci-fi thriller has been getting a lot of hype, let’s hope it delivers. On the complete opposite end of the movie spectrum, we have the romantic-drama The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams (you know you have a hit love story when McAdams plays the lead female role). And did anyone even know Ashton Kutcher had a movie coming out this week? Well, he does. It is comedy called Spread and it also stars Anne Heche. We probably didn’t know much about it, besides the trailer we showed you back in July, because it doesn’t seem like a movie worth knowing about, but I might be wrong.
Here are the movies coming out August 14th:
