‘Tis the summer for animations! First Shrek 4, then Toy Story 3 and now Despicable Me! It even managed to take down Twilight in its second week in theaters! Damn Twi-hards, you’re really dropping the ball on this whole box office thing. I mean, you’ve let Edward and Jacob get beaten out by a group of animated minions. What’s up with that? This weekend there’s a wide variety of films for you to chose from. If you like horror and gore there’s Nimrod Antal’s reboot Predators, based on the popular eighties franchise that features aliens who hunt down and kill humans. In this case, the world’s most deadly assassins have been dropped on their planet and left to the predators mercy. The cast is led by Oscar winner Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne. There’s also the family film Despicable Me, with Steve Carell and Jason Segel as two super-villains fighting each other for evil supremacy. Like every animated film hitting theaters these days, it’s in 3D!
Check out what else is opening this weekend…

Move over How to Train Your Dragon, Universal Pictures is releasing their animated feature Despicable Me in hopes of cashing in on some that 3D family-fun. The film stars “The Office’s” Steve Carell, “How I Met Your Mother’s” Jason Segel and Get Him to the Greek’s Russell Brand. With those 3 as the main actors it sounds like a match made in comedy heaven, right? The movie does have its funny moments and is filled with plenty of entertaining material but it’s in no shape or form the best animated film of the season (Toy Story 3 took that honor)…

Steve Carell is known for playing characters who are off the wall but not in a dangerous or sinister way. From the inept Andy in the 40 Year Old Virgin, to the slightly mentally challenged Brick in Anchorman, to the socially awkward Michael Scott on “The Office” this man knows how to play quirky. With his latest project, Despicable Me he steps out of his comfort zone to lend his voice and his talent to a truly despicable character.
In the film he plays Gru, a super-villain who’s trying to pull off the biggest heist in the world. He wants to shrink and steal the moon! It sounds insane but this is an animated film and if the shoe fits, wear it. The actor recently took part in a press conference in promotion of Despicable Me and spoke about the ups and downs of voice acting, how long the process took, and how he felt playing the son of the legendary Julie Andrews…

Jason Segel is one of the many actors to come out of the Judd Apatow school of comedy and following in the footsteps of Jay Baruchel and Jonah Hill, he too has landed a role in an animated film. The actor stars as Vector, the nemesis to Steve Carell’s Gru in Universal Pictures Despicable Me. Over the past decade he’s gone from the co-star of a defunct cult show (“Freaks and Geeks“) to a series regular on one of the most popular comedies on television, “How I Met Your Mother.”
Not only is he an actor but he’s also a musician, a writer, and even a puppeteer! Is there anything this man can’t do? At the age of 30 he’s accomplished more in his career than a lot of people have in a lifetime. When we met up with Segel to discuss his new film he spoke about the perks of hiding behind a cartoon character, his comedy rival (you’ll be surprised by his choice), and his work on the upcoming Muppets movie…

NCM (does anyone know what NCM is without looking it up? I challenge you!) has just released a new Despicable Me featurette with your favorite Steve Carell, the lovable Julie Andrews, Jason Segal along and new-comer Miranda Cosgrove. The film is directed by Chris Meledandri and Pierre Coffin, and co-stars EVERYONE, including the aforementioned and Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride and Jemaine Clement. This is basically just the trailer with a few quotes from some of the actors cut in, nothing huge, but fun none-the-less.

The marketing for the upcoming animated feature Despicable Me leaves much to be desired. The film’s premise seems funny enough and it has a talented cast, but the trailers are seriously lacking. Over at Times Online, they’ve just posted the official international teaser trailer and it’s left me more confused than ever about this movie. Take a look…

Julie Andrews is known for playing sweet matriarchal figures in movies, but this summer she’s going to be a real “wench.” According to the actress she’ll be appearing as a one of the bad guys in the animated film Despicable Me. I never thought I’d live to see the day when Mary Poppins got down and dirty, but Andrews had a lot of devilish things to say about her character…
