ccwbpanel6kj09 07 24 Comic Con 2009: Gary Oldman Reveals News About A New Batman Movie

***Update: In a press conference with Gary Oldman who just commented on what he said earlier “I’ve said a lot, I’ve been a very naughty boy today…” Which leads me to believe that what he’s said is true. He didn’t say I shouldn’t have said that or that it wasn’t true. So apparently what’s below is true!***

***2nd Update:  Video of this announcement added after the jump!***

Right now, I am sitting in the Warner Brothers panel at Comic-Con. So far, they have showed us some pretty cool clips, trailers, and had some interesting questions and answers. However, the most exciting bit of news came from the wonderful Gary Oldman who just revealed news about the release and production of the next Batman movie! We have yet to hear any confirmations about it, but apparently it’s in the works, with or without Nolan.

Check out his quote after the jump!

Warner Brothers Worried About R Rated Blockbusters

terminator salvation 04 Warner Brothers Worried About R Rated Blockbusters

Let me preface this story by saying I am in no way trying to viciously attack Watchmen. I’m just informing you of the information that I’ve learned. With that being said, according to IESB Warner Brothers is beginning to rethink the importance of the MPAA ratings for their tent pole films. After the underwhelming box office performance of this month’s Watchmen, the studio is looking to cut down on big budget R rated material. This would effect several 2009 releases that are still awaiting their ratings approval including this summer’s Terminator Salvation.

Can Anyone Compete With The Dark Knight?

jokersubway 1 Can Anyone Compete With The Dark Knight?

Since the record breaking opening of The Dark Knight last July, there has been an invisible line drawn in the sand that separates the darker comic book movies from the lighter fare. For the past ten years studios have been shooting out comic based movies for the sole purpose of tapping into their lucrative fanboy audience. Films such as Spiderman, Fantastic Four, and X-Men all spawned sequels and big payday’s, but the films quality suffered as the franchises progressed. In the case of TDK, Christopher Nolan’s Batman series continued to get better by sticking close to it’s source material, and concentrating more on story than gimmicks.

The Watchmen Review

watchmenmontage09 2 25 The Watchmen Review

Well, apparently the embargo on Watchmen reviews has been lifted. So! To answer the question I’ve been asked many times over, “how was Watchmen?” Here we go! There is no doubt about it, it’s epic. It is unlike any other comic book movie you’ve ever seen. And in honor of Zack Snyder, I’ve made this review R-rated. So deal with it. It’s more real, more gritty, and sorry Dark Knight fans, more dark than any comic book film we’ve ever seen before. In comparison, it makes TDK look clean and shiny. Now don’t get out your pitchforks just yet, it’s depth may also be it’s biggest problem. I’m not sure if the box office is ready for such a dark comic book film. But this is a solid film, not just a superhero flick. Recently we stated that we did not think that TDK was worthy of an Oscar nomination because although is was an amazing film it did not transcend it’s genre and The Watchmen does. There is far more emphasis on the characters, the background, the relationships than there are fight scenes (although don’t get me wrong there are plenty of explosions and special effects for you to enjoy). The Dark Knight, opened a door and now The Watchmen has stepped through it.

*** Some minor spoilers ahead for those of you who have NOT read the graphic novel***

darkkngiht09 1 30 More Batman 3 Script Rumors

Over at IESB, Jeff Otto tried to break producer Chuck Roven on the current status of the next Batman film. Although they’re saying that they have inside sources and that they’re almost sure a script is in the works, it doesn’t sound like Roven was ready to break.

IESB: We’ve been told that Jonathan, Chris and David are working on the new Batman script. Do you know the direction they’re going or do you wait for them to formulate something more complete before you get involved?

Chuck Roven: The creative driver of the project at this point is Chris. There’s really nothing more for me to say about that. When he feels that he’s got something to talk about, then we’ll be able to talk about it.
