Remember when Kevin Smith was the man who made realistic and low budget comedies with a great story, huge laughs, and a little bit of heart? Remember that? Now it seems he’s ceded the territory to Judd Apatow and his merry men and rather than attempt to reclaim the territory for himself, Smith did the next best thing: He just cast the entire Apatow troupe in a movie so stylistically similar to his heir’s films that you could almost call it a rip-off.

With High School Musical 3: Senior Year (starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale) reigning top at the box office with a $ 42 million premiere weekend, director Kenny Ortega’s teeny-bopping masterpiece is enthralling children nationwide. With the increasing success of the Disney projects, however, the responsibilities of these young stars have now escalated to both actor and “role model.” With the media reporting their every move, criticism is expected in such a public profession. Coming in February 2009, is Paul McGuigan’s new film Push, an action packed thriller about people with secret powers hiding from the government. The trailer kind of looks like an expensive two hour “Heroes” episode to me at this point. The film stars Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning (in a mini skirt and hooker boats, which should NOT be happening, especially since she still looks about 11 year-old), Camilla Belle, and Djimon Hounsou.
Official synopsis: Push burrows deep into the deadly world of psychic espionage where artificially enhanced paranormal operatives have the ability to move objects with their minds, see the future, create new realities and kill without ever touching their victims. Against this setting, a young man and a teenage girl take on a clandestine agency in a race against time that will determine the future of civilization.

Last week, a new film by Deborah Kampmeier, hit theaters. “Hounddog” is a story about a young girl finding sanctuary within music – or at least that’s what the story should have been about. I’ll admit it – I am a sucker for cutesy, heartfelt movies with Southern accents. Plus this one had an amazing cast including Dakota Fanning, Robin Wright Penn, David Morse, Piper Laurie and many more. So when I saw the trailer for “Hounddogs” I was happy to spend my sunny afternoon in a dark theatre. I was ready to walk out of the theatre with that warm feeling and a slight twang in my speech.
But by the end, I wanted Dakota Fanning to get bitten by the snakes that she has some inexplicable cosmic connection with throughout the film. And I never want to hear the song “Hounddog” again. This movie is not “My Girl” and it’s not “Forrest Gump”, but it kind of wants to be both and fails.
