Since this deals entirely with a film whose massive twist is pretty much the entire crux of its storyline, I’m basically going to stand here and whistle until we get to the jump line, so as not to drop any spoilers for the five of you who haven’t seen Catfish.

So… how about that locals sports team?  Weather too hot or cold for you?  Boy, can you believe what that wacky, drug-addled celebrity did this week?

Ok, we good?  Alright then.

catfish2 1 10 Catfish: Movie Review

Deactivate your Facebook and terminate your MySpace, because the internet just got a little creepier. After a successful premiere at this year’s Sundance, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost are gearing up for the nationwide release of Catfish, a documentary that centers around Schulman’s brother, Nev, and a number of his peculiar online relationships. This project redefines the concept of bizarre in a mere 86 minutes.

Nev Schulman, Ariel Schulman, and Henry Joost aren’t familiar names now but by the end of the year they might be. The trio is the driving force behind the most talked about documentary to come out of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Catfish. It’s an intriguing look at social networking and the strange journey it takes these men on. The marketing for the movie has been purposefully vague with the tagline  “What is Catfish?” It’s crazy, it’s surprising, and most importantly it’s not what you think it is.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the filmmakers to discuss the feature and the hype surrounding it. They gave a little more insight into what they learned during and after the shoot and discussed the concept of online personas, and the darker, unexpected parts of their journey. Check out the interview…

Catfish Trailer Premiere – Watch at Your Own Risk

catfish7 29 10 Catfish Trailer Premiere Watch at Your Own Risk

As I said right after Sundance, the trick to reviewing, talking about, or in anyway promoting Catfish is how to make you understand how great it is without giving anything away. Much like there tag-line in the poster above “don’t let anyone tell you what it is” — the things that makes this film stand apart is the journey that both you and the filmmakers take together, knowing to much both destroys both the intention of the film and your experience. If there is anyway for me to convince you to just wait for the films release on September 17, 2010 without watching the trailer below than stop reading now (you can even read my “review” on about the film that doesn’t talk about it).

But if that’s just not enough for you greedy reader… With all that being said, the film that should never have a trailer has a trailer — apparently people have to find out about it somehow! So if you need more in order to buy a ticket, check out the trailer below…

Sundance 2010: Catfish – The Film I Went Looking For

catfish2 1 10 Sundance 2010: Catfish The Film I Went Looking For

This will be the most “spoiler free” review I have ever written. The trick to reviewing Catfish is how to make you understand how great it is without giving anything away. Part of the film is the journey that both you and the filmmakers take together, and if I tell you too much, I would be destroying both the intention of the film and your experience of it.

I’ve been mulling over this “review” in my head for a little while now, worrying about getting the wording just right. Since the one thing this film and the Sundance Film Festival has taught me is that truth is so important, I’ll say exactly what I got on the phone and told my friend while walking out of the theater: “This film is amazing, it not only surprises you but effects you, it is what Sundance is about, it is what filmmaking should be about, it is one of the best films I have ever seen.” I think I then mumbled something about being both tired and inspired and it rhyming after that…
