Though it’s easy to suggest a nine month move means a film’s in trouble, it’s hard to know what to make of Warner Bros.’s decision to move Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Killer to March 2013. It’s much easier to judge their decision to scrap a release date on David Dobkin‘s Arthur & Lancelot, which puts the film into limbo.

Three of the big films of 2012 are going to reinterpretations of fairy tales, but the one with the best credentials is Jack the Giant Killer. It comes from director Bryan Singer and the script was (at least partly) written by Christopher McQuarrie – and these guys were the team behind The Usual Suspects. Anyone who isn’t living in a cave and hasn’t seen the X-Men: First Class trailer knows that the prequel film is set in 1962 during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis—which is inarguably cool. And now, according to Dark Horizons, producer Bryan Singer is hinting that the film’s sequels might skip ahead to the ‘70s, and then the ‘80s (because if there’s one thing fans are clamoring for, it’s to see Wolverine rocking a Flock of Seagulls haircut).

Over the past few weeks, fans of the X-Men franchise have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for details regarding the plot to the prequel First Class. The recent influx of casting changes including the addition of January Jones as Emma Frost and Zoe Kravitz as Angel (Salvadore?) has taken people for a loop. After the abomination of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s safe to say that the Marvel franchise is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Twentieth Century Fox’s latest attempt to restore dignity to the series comes in the form of First Class which will be produced by Bryan Singer and directed by Matthew Vaughn. Poor Bryan Singer. According to THR, the director, screenwriter, and producer’s next project Jack the Giant Killer has been delayed. The New Line Cinema production was supposed to begin shooting sometime this summer but it’s not happening. He must be distracted by all the movement going on at Fox with X-Men: First Class.

Last week we learned that Kick-Ass‘ Matthew Vaughn was up to direct the comic spin-off, X-Men: First Class. Initially 20th Century Fox and the director were said to be in “talks” but now his involvement has been confirmed and a release date has been set for the film. Vaughn and previous X-Men helmer Bryan Singer will join forces to bring some respectability back to the series.
