“This isn’t a medicated movie.” As I said right after I saw this film at Sundance, beware it’s brilliance (read the full Sundance review). This is a real film, made by a group of passionate filmmakers who set out to make something honest, something alive and most importantly something void of any kind of sedation. The film itself has a realistic quality that many directors try to achieve but few do as well as Derek Cianfrance.
Cianfrance was a joy to speak with and I left this interview not only educated but inspired. He looks like the “real” life version of Ryan Gosling and his love of filmmaking exudes from his every word. He’s poured his soul into this film and fought for the right to do so for 12 years. After putting up a good fight against the MPAA regarding their decision to give Blue Valentine an NC-17 rating, The Weinstein Company can celebrate because the board has overturned their ruling. The film will now be released in theaters with a slightly less offensive rating according to Deadline, who said the final vote to change the original decision was unanimous.

Enough is enough! We can watch vampires dry hump but we can’t watch a real relationship unfold? We heard a while ago that The Weinstein Company planned to fight for two of their films, but threats weren’t enough, they now have had to hire lawyers to challenge the MPAA’s NC-17 rating of Blue Valentine and the R rating of The King’s Speech.
Blue Valentine is being prosecuted because of it’s realistic sexual nature and The King’s Speech is being attacked because of a few “bad words”… I have seen both films and not only are they two of the best films of the year but the sex and the language is completely necessary to both stories and are in no way deserving of their ratings, especially Blue Valentine‘s dreaded NC-17 stamp.

The other day we reported on the MPAA’s decision to stamp the upcoming drama Blue Valentine with a big NC-17. The ruling was met with much confusion from the film community, especially those who were lucky enough to see it at Sundance. No one really thinks it deserves such a harsh rating most notably its producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein. They won’t take this judgment laying down.

Earlier this morning it was reported (via Deadline) that the MPAA had given the indie drama Blue Valentine an NC-17 rating. This pretty much ensures that this critically acclaimed Oscar contender won’t receive a wide opening and won’t be seen by the general public. If we’ve learned anything from the Hatchet II scandal, it’s that theater chains cave, and they don’t like to play things that don’t have the rating board’s blessing. Coincidentally, the same day this news broke a trailer was released for the film. We have the skinny on the risque rating plus the new trailer below…

When everyone told me that Blue Valentine was “great but depressing” I automatically expected someone to be raped, murdered, tortured, something… I never expected to see such a simple and yet honest portrayal of a broken relationship. Whether you’re a man or a woman, if you have ever loved and lost, you won’t make it out of this film unscathed. Both Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams take on two extremely layered and vulnerable characters and give two phenomenal performances of one of the best scripts at Sundance.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein aren’t letting the recent demise of Miramax get them down, their current label The Weinstein Company, has just picked up the indie film, Blue Valentine. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. It’s just one of two projects the studio has purchased including the documentary, The Tillman Story.
