With so many movies that, er, struggled with quality being released on DVD this week, I thought it prudent to blow out the format and play a little game in this week’s DVD picks column.
It’s quite simple. We will list ten DVD’s coming out this week along with a description from the manufacturer of what the movie is about, complete with some of the cast. It’s up to you to decipher which of these movies went straight to DVD and which actually premiered in a theater! (Hint: Seven bowed at a theater and three made the humiliating journey straight to DVD)
You may be able to get three of them, but I think you’ll find it pretty tough to get the other three. It’s just sort of that week in DVD land.

Step aside Coen Brothers, there’s a new western film in town, and it stars a green cockeyed lizard in some authentic cowboy attire, Rango. The Johnny Depp animated featured followed the success of last weekend’s top choice Gnomeo and Juliet lassoing in a hefty $38 million during its opening weekend. Another successful newcomer was Matt Damon and Emily Blunt‘s The Adjustment Bureau. The Universal picture was No. 2 making over $20 million.
Though our box office predictions were rather popular, we didn’t get it all right, we had predicted that Beastly would be down in the bottom half of the top 10, but the romance-fantasy film surprised us and came in at No. 3 grossing $10 million.

The Oscar race is over and this weekend will see a slate of new releases all competing for the top prize at the box office. Johnny Depp’s Rango, and Matt Damon’s The Adjustment Bureau will see mild competition from such teen fare as Topher Grace’s Take Me Home Tonight, and the Vanessa Hudgen’s starrer Beastly. In all, it should be a busy weekend filled with choices.

Neil Patrick Harris has landed two film projects this summer. Harris will take the lead role in the comedy The Best and The Brightest and co-star in Beastly, a film based on the 2007 novel by Alex Flinn.
In The Best and The Brightest, Harris will play a carefree father moves his family from Delaware to New York City’s Upper East Side. The family then finds it hard to handle the city’s competitive private school scene.
