A trio of modestly big early year releases hit DVD this week and they run the gamut. Sci-Fi-philes can dig into some Battle: Los Angeles, gross-out comedy lovers have Hall Pass to whet their dirty appetites and fans of inexplicable fairy tale remakes can indulge themselves with Red Riding Hood. Such a variety of DVDs, but are they really that different? Perhaps not.
Learn why below and check out the worst DVD of the week…

Battle: Los Angeles debuted at the top of its pack this weekend, making more than any film, including Red Riding Hood and Mars Needs Moms. The thriller generated $36 million, while Red Riding Hood produced just over $14 million, and placed third. Last week we predicted that Rango would place before the new Disney film Mars Needs Moms, and we were right. Rango kept up there (and ranked No.2) grossing $23.1 million, while Mars Needs Moms bombed grossing only $5 million.

It’s time. Time for high body counts, mass hysteria, alien invaders, explosions, tanks, helos (I learned that’s what the Marine’s call a chopper!), machine guns and a hell of a lot one liners like “we’ve already had breakfast”! Hell yeah! Battle: Los Angeles hits theaters this weekend with a whole lot of blood-shed! This movie is basically a video game on the big screen. For those of you looking for a good popcorn flick with plenty of solid action, this film delivers. On the other hand if you’re looking for a solid story, you might be better off with Jane Eyre or last week’s The Adjustment Bureau. Let me explain…

How is it that Aaron Eckhart hasn’t been in EVERY single war film for the paste decade? I mean look at that face, THAT CHIN! His looks just scream war hero and though they haven’t been pounding down his door for those kinds of roles, he was not only happy but ready to put in the work once given opportunity. He didn’t wait for Battle: Los Angeles to get funded, he worked on a short film with the director to prove that he and this film were worth making. He wasn’t about to just wear the Marine fatigues, he was going to become as close as he could to actually being an actual Marine.
It was clear when sitting down with him and his co-stars that not only is Aaron a serious actor, he’s serious about everything he takes on. From breaking his arm and running around the set like a bad-ass to being able to deliver some pretty awesomely cheesy action-hero lines, Eckhart delivers on this performance and he’s how…

Battle:Los Angeles is not just a fun, high-action, alien movie, by Jonathan Liebesman, it’s an actual event! That’s right, just when you thought you were safe, there’s another reason to hide from the world, or what’s out of this world. Exactly 69 years ago to this day there was a REAL BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES with a actual Unidentified Flying Object over the exact same area that is completely and utterly demolished in the film. Now the “real” Battle of Los Angeles was an actual siting of a spacecraft a mere two weeks after the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
Now I know what you’re thinking! But I’m not making this up, this is a well documented event which has still gone unexplained for 69 years. Here are some of the facts…
