After news broke that Robert Rodriguez was inexplicably filming Machete Kills, a sequel to 2010’s Machete (itself a spin-off from a Grindhouse pseudo-trailer), the question became: who will show up to star in this thing? A random cavalcade of stars showed up for the last one (Robert De Niro, Don Johnson, Lindsay Lohan); so far, Machete Kills has nabbed returning stars Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba, as well as good decision maker Mel Gibson. And now, the latest name added to the roster is Amber Heard.

Based on the recently published, national bestseller by the troublesome Dr. Gonzo (Hunter S. Thompson) Bruce Robinson presents a disappointing adaptation of The Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp, Richard Jenkins and Aaron Eckhart. I would’ve included Amber Heard in the line-up but her performance is so abominable that I’ve deemed her unworthy of sharing a sentence with the aforementioned actors.

Johnny Depp played Dr. Hunter S. Thompson for Terry Gilliam, and has become the custodian for the good doctor’s cinematic estate. So when The Rum Diary came into being, Depp playing another ur-Thompson in Paul Kemp was likely the only way the film could be made. The last time we checked Rose McGowan was attached to play the red-haired warrior, but she soon dropped out for undisclosed reasons. The project had been in development for years and when she left everyone assumed it was over.
