’300′ Prequel May Move Forward Without Zack Snyder

For all of those hoping that Zack Snyder’s work on the upcoming Superman reboot would keep him from being able to make Xerxes, the planned sequel to 300: Human Growth Hormones, Homoeroticism, and Capes, it looks like you may be out of luck—Xerxes may be going on with or without him.

According to Superhero Hype, Immortals and Xerxes producer Mark Canton, stated that Xerxes may not be able to wait for Snyder to complete his work on the new Supes flick:

“I can’t say…I mean, he’s got ‘Superman.’ He’s busy. We’re busy. I don’t think we’re going to wait two years. But we’ll work together with him and figure out who the filmmaker should be if he doesn’t direct it.”

“We’re taking a lot of time because [Zack] really did create something that goes in the time capsule… We want to be faithful to the first one, but we don’t want to do a conventional sequel. But we’re getting close.”

Sigh. I guess my hopes that we were all going to dodge this bullet just went up in smoke, huh? Oh, well, if there’s one thing the world needs, it’s a CGI-laden violence extravaganza that hijacks historical characters in order for 18-24 males can zone out for two hours.

This has been a franchise like no other… it seems to be never ending! This Gore Verbinski fantasy action film teams Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) together in an attempt to rescue Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) who is the governor’s daughter as well as the love of Turner’s life. If you like pirates, sword fights… well nevermind all that. If you love Johnny Depp, you will love this film.

Pick of the Week: Predator -

You have to see John McTierman’s 1987 sci-fi action adventure, Predator before the remake takes over. It stars the one and only governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger as a member of a team of commandos on a mission in a Central American jungle. Things take a bad turn when they discover they are being hunted by an extra terrestrial warrior. What better form of entertainment than watching California’s governor kick some extra terrestrial butt? They were even talking about a remake recently.

300 Converted to 3D, Theatrical Re-release

Today in meathead movie news, 300 director Zack Snyder told Coming Soon that his 2006 capes, loincloths and abs epic may be receiving the ubiquitous 3-D treatment and a re-release from Warner Brothers. While it’s a completely unnecessary money-grubbing move concerning a movie that was fairly bone-headed to begin with, it would remind us all of a time when Gerard Butler seemed remotely cool before falling into the icy rom-com clutches of Jennifer Aniston and Katherine Heigl.

Here’s what Snyder had to say about the progress of 300 in 3D.

“I had a bunch of meetings and basically, what convinced me was that they actually did a conversion of 300. Not the whole thing. I haven’t seen the whole movie but they’re talking about doing the whole movie… I saw maybe like a ten-minute section that they’d just done. By the way, they did an amazing job. The way we shot it actually, it’s almost like a 3D movie anyway, so it really lends itself to that. There is a difference.”

Snyder, who is currently finishing up a 3D animated feature entitled Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (seriously), also mentioned that 300 scribe Frank Miller is already in the process of writing a 300 prequel, Xerxes, which will focus on the first film’s villain. Frat boys rejoice!

“I feel like at this point I’m still waiting to see it, but I’m confident that it’s going to be awesome. I’m not going to say I’m 100%, like that’s it, but on the other hand, I’m pretty confident it’s going to be awesome.”

Awesome, man. Awesome.

Zack Snyder Talks 300 Sequel, Sucker Punch, Watchmen Director’s Cut

Watchmen and 300 director Zack Snyder confirmed that he will be showing the Watchmen Director’s Cut in select movie theaters next month. The movie will show in theaters the weekend before the Comic-Con in Los Angeles, Dallas, Minneapolis, and New York. Each city will only have one theater showing the movie, so keep an eye for updates on where to do. Exited yet you comic book fanatics? There’s more.

If you happen to own Watchmen on Blu-ray, then you’re in for a one-of-a-kind treat: From the comfort of your own home, you’ll be able to watch and have an interactive experience by asking questions through your Blu-ray players. Just in case you don’t own Watchmen or 300 on Blu-ray, know that it is filled with infinite options. If you would like to only watch the films, you can do that, but if you’re hungry for more, there’s behind the scenes features and how the movies were made. If you’re a fan, then the Blu-ray discs are definitely for you.

“I know for a fact that Frank [Miller] is writing right now. [He's] drawing away and seems to be knee-deep in it. I think he’s going to head back to Greece again and do another reconnaissance.

As for the look, he’s looking to go back to the style he used in 300:

I think we would use the same technology… I don’t want it to look too Star Wars-ian… Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We’re going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places. There would be an opportunity for bigger visions, though I’d hope for the same aesthetic. The tech we used for ’300′ was not a revolution. It’s basically what the weatherman has. Look, instead of Accuweather it’s Sparta… It’s going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids.”

Top Ten Greatest Fight Movies

Channing Tatum’s latest film Fighting will hit theaters. It’s a film by Dito Montiel, who also directed the actor in the 2006 indie drama A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. The story focuses on a young man who hustles and participates in underground street fights to score extra cash. After watching the aggressive trailer for the flick I began thinking about some of my favorite fight films and how this one would compare. I’ve compiled a list of what I consider the Top Ten Greatest Fight Movies of all time. Take a look, discuss, and most importantly enjoy!

10. Gladiator (2000)

Gladiator is a bare bones type of fight film. It takes you back to one of the earliest examples of fighting as a sport. A cruel sport, but still a sport. Russell Crowe gave an Oscar winning performance as an army general turned slave who fights to avenge the death of his wife and son. Although the best part about this scene is Joaquin Phoenix’s tongue. Where did that thing come from?

9. 300 (2006)

Speaking of old school fighting. 300 is a live action war film adapted from the Frank Miller graphic novel of the same name. It features a lot of stylized action sequences but plenty of gore. In the film a group of 300 Spartans go up against several armies more than 10 times their size. Sure this movie introduced us to Zack Snyder’s slow motion obsession, but it also taught us a valuable lesson. If you plan to dine in hell, you’ll have to fight to get to the table.

8. The Streetfighter (1974)

Oh Sonny Chiba. The Asian action star who some regard as the “not so pretty” version of Bruce Lee, is one of my favorite martial artists. I quickly acknowledged him for his own fighting style when I saw him in The Streetfighter. He’s lean, mean, and very angry… all the time. He’s definitely no Lee because when Chiba fights, he fights dirty.

7. Bloodsport (1988)

Bloodsport was the film that introduced me to Jean Claude Van Damme, and his infamous split kicks that he faithfully does in every movie. In the film he starred as Frank Dux, an American martial artist who travels to Hong Kong to participate in a deadly underground tournament called The Kumite. I loved the fact that Van Damme was playing an American, yet once again he spoke with a perfect Belgian accent. But the film isn’t about acting, its about fighting. In this case he fought, he won, and most importantly he lived to tell about it.

6. Drunken Master II (1994)

This film is probably one of Jackie Chan’s most famous in both the U.S. and overseas. His use of the famous “drunken boxing” fighting style is popular in Chinese lore, and has been imitated in several films. How many people do you know can drink the ”joy juice,” and turn into a martial arts master? In the sequel to the 1978 original, the fight at the end between Jackie Chan and Ken Lo always sticks out like a sharp kick to the face.

5. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino teamed up again in a big way with the Kung Fu homage, Kill Bill Vol. 1. Thurman stars as The Bride, a woman who survives a murder attempt by her lover Bill played by David Carradine. Consumed by anger she goes through strenuous training in martial arts so she can successfully knock off everyone who had a hand in the plot have her killed. And of course at the top of her list, is Bill. The best part about this scene. The music and the close ups. Thank you Tarantino.

4. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000)

Another movie that has strong female characters is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This film was directed by Ang Lee and starred Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh and a then unknown Zhang Ziyi. With some of the most beautifully choreographed fight scenes I’ve ever seen this film had to make the top five. I love the fact that it shows two strong women with athleticism that can rival any man in the action genre. In typical fashion Yeoh shows why she has been a mainstay in action films for nearly 20 years.

3. The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix is a major marker in for sci-fi, action films. Before it’s release in 1999 audiences had never seen the combination of extensive wire work, traditional martial arts, and rotating camera angles used in such a capacity. What’s not to love in this film. The fight scenes are in a league of their own. This movie made being a computer geek, bad ass! With several breathtaking action sequences to choose from the most notable one features Neo (Keanu Reeves) and the infamous back bend that left us breathless.

2. Enter the Dragon (1973)

Let’s give credit to where credit’s due. Bruce Lee was the pioneer who taught American filmmakers what choreographed fight scenes should look like. If it wasn’t for Lee we would be stuck watching stiff fist fights, hoping at some point a kick get’s thrown in. All of Lee’s films are dear to me, but I have a special place in my heart for Enter the Dragon. It was the first Kung Fu filmed produced by a major Hollywood studio and it featured bit appearances by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung.

1. Fight Club (1999)

I know the first rule of Fight Club is not to talk about it, but I have too! When this film was released in 1999 it blew audiences away by introducing them to Tyler Durden. Directed by David Fincher, the film stars Edward Norton as a dissatisfied white collar worker who joins an underground fight club with Durden (Brad Pitt). What happens when a generation of men feel suffocated, and conflicted by society? They go back to the basics. They destroy, they attack, they fight!

What’s so great about this scene is how simple it is. No tricks, fancy footwork, or special effects. Just men being men.

Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic on DVD

Warner Brothers is pushing out the final marketing and promotional materials for Zack Snyder’s Watchmen adaptation. The film arrives in theaters next month and the studio wants you to be prepared for the event. In an exclusive press release, Warner’s Premiere is announcing the release of Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic. This is a DVD that covers all twelve chapters of the Watchmen graphic novel, and adds “motion, voice and sound to the book’s strikingly drawn panels.” It will be available for retail sale on March 3, which is the Tuesday before the film hits theaters.

Frank Miller Wants ‘Buck Rogers’

Graphic novel legend, writer, and director Frank Miller may be bringing his interpretation of the campy comic serial Buck Rogers to the big screen. According to THR, Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment are nearing a deal to bring Buck Rogers into the 21 century.

Odd Lot, the shingle run by Gigi Pritzker and Deborah Del Prete, is in negotiations to option the rights to “Rogers” from Nu Image/Millennium, which obtained those rights this year from the Dille Trust. Millennium is expected to get a credit on the movie but won’t be involved in day-to-day production.

ABC had a TV series in the ’50s, and NBC produced a feature film and TV series in the late ’70s and early ’80s, which imagined the space explorer as someone who woke up in the 25th century to find Earth destroyed and was then consigned to roam distant planets.

Movie News: Watchman, Kung Fu Panda 2, 300

Kung Fu Panda the sequel is set to be released June 3, 2011. The first film grossed over $626 million, which basically means, why the hell not make a sequel? Jack Black and Angelina Jolie will both be coming back to reprise their roles (can you reprise animated roles?).

Last night, Watchmen director Zack Snyder, showed off some footage of his latest film. Aside from hearing that people said that the clips were ‘absolutely phenomenal’, ‘breathtaking’, and ‘mind blowing’ we also got some juice on the film from Alex at First Showing:

Running time is 2 hours and 43 minutes, and Zack Snyder seems to think that’s the amount of times he needs to tell his story.
Snyder stated that there won’t be a sequel and there won’t be a prequel if he’s involved.
The next trailer that we’ll be seeing will be coming with Quantum of Solace (for those of you not keeping up, that’s November 14th).
Snyder will be attempting to implement “Tales of the Black Freighter” into the film but there are no guarantees, possibly something worked into the intro. There will definitely be a version on the DVD. Just so they can tease you for even LONGER.
Watchmen will be in theater March 6, 2009 (but we already knew that)

As for the 300 sequel, El Guapo from IESB.net has reported:

Snyder says he’s spoken with Frank Miller who will be writing and drawing the graphic novel that the second film will be based on. Upon Miller’s completion of the book, then, and only then, will they delve into writing a script for the movie.

Snyder continued and said he would not have any input into the novel and wants it to be a creation of Miller’s 100%.
