RedDVDALP1 24 11 New DVD Releases: Red, Secretariat, Glee

If you like indie movies, this is a dream DVD weekend for you as it is absolutely loaded with smaller pictures. Sure, there’s a wide release in there (Takers), but for the most part, this weekend belongs to the little guy with everything from Oscar contenders (Animal Kingdom) to people writing spam e-mails saying their movie should be an Oscar contender (Buried). So set your DVD player for “Arthouse” and enjoy.

Or, if none of that is your bag, you can watch lots of old TV shows on DVD. Or relax with the canine misadventures of Chris Parnell.

oscar statuettesalp1 25 11 Oscar Power Rankings: Nomination Reaction and Early Winner Predictions

Well, that was…not exciting at all. How not exciting was it? I managed to go a staggering 40-for-45 on my Oscar predictions this year. I ran three categories and got four in all the others, with the biggest underdog ranked seventh (Javier Bardem, shocker!)

In other words, this was a painfully predictable Oscar morning, and it’s shaping up that Oscar night may be just as obvious.

Thus far, here’s how the race for the statuettes is shaping up…

Red State The Sons 20 12 10 kc Sundance 2011: Westboro Baptist Church to Protest Red State

The abhorrent hate group known as the Westboro Baptist Church (you know them as the jerks behind all those “God Hates Fags” signs), have announced in a press release that they will be protesting the premiere of Kevin Smith’s new film Red State. The film, which premiers at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, January 23rd, has been picking up steam as rumors over its content and the hush-hush nature of its release has gained buzz. To read the press release, learn about counter-protests, and hear festival director John Cooper’s take on the controversy, check out the rest of the story after the jump…

TheSocialNetworkDVDALP1 10 11 New DVD Releases: The Social Network, Piranha 3D, Hot in Cleveland

This is a very slow week for DVDs. Very slow. Like two movies and a smattering of TV shows-level slow. But there’s good new – the film of the year - The Social Network – makes its triumphant debut on DVD which means all the people I know who haven’t seen the movie yet can finally stop bugging me about when it comes out on DVD. Because it’s here! Not much else is here, but at least we’ve got one strong one! Check it out below…

New year! New DVD Releases! And there’s a lot to choose from even though the choices are pretty slim. Basically DVD buyers have the options of either a group of movies they forgot came out this year and some miniature Indies that even the most dedicated cinephile will need to Google. All that, plus a returning HBO Series coming off its worst season. Yes, the post-holiday DVD doldrums have arrived. Check it out below…

Oscar Power Rankings: Early Precursor and Globes Reaction

oscar12 18 10 Oscar Power Rankings: Early Precursor and Globes Reaction

The beginning of this week was a super-Tuesday of sorts in the Oscar Primary Race that is precursor season with nearly a dozen critics groups weighing in, including that overrated Oscar Predictor known as The Golden Globes.

Now, I know it’s chic to overreact to The Golden Globes, saying how snubs are dooming Oscar chances and surprise nominees are now way out in front of the race, but that is not, nor has it ever been the case. The Globes are a weird award put on by a few dozen people who don’t overlap with any Oscar voters at all and often have more to do with name recognition than quality.

So. Golden Globes. You’re going to ignore them. Right? Good.
