Christopher and Jonah Nolan Directing Man of Steel, Justice League?

Fans of the DC Comics legend Superman are still in shock over news that David S. Goyer and Jonah Nolan will be penning the screenplay for the new film as well as Batman 3. On top of that we also heard that Greg Berlanti might be in talks to direct the big screen adaptation of The Flash, so what could top those three movies? How about the Justice League of America?

Ever since Christopher Nolan accepted the gig as Superman’s mentor he’s had a hand in everything DC. I guess that’s what happens when you direct the largest grossing comic book movie of all time (The Dark Knight). We’re hearing over at IESB, that he along with his screenwriter brother might be more involved with The Man of Steel project than we imagined. The Nolans could be ushering in a new era for DC based films leading up to a Justice League movie.

The whispers in our ear (again unconfirmed!) say Chris will shepherd his Batman and the next cinematic Superman (and presumably Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, The Flash and others) towards a Justice League movie. That he will direct after The Man of Steel and Batman 3 are released. We’re talking one big monopoly or more appropriately Nolanopoly.

It seems as if Warner Bros is trying their hand at a superhero team-up movie similar to Marvel’s The Avengers. The only difference is the JLA film has been on the backburner for years, so it’s not fair to say their playing copycat. Marvel just put their plan into action a little faster than DC. Word on the street has Jonah possibly helming The Man of Steel, which would be a monumental way for him to make his directorial debut but is it too much too soon?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Nolan shepherding other films in the right direction since he was able to restore credibility to the Batman franchise, but he’s not the god of comic book movies. Every character in DC’s arsenal isn’t Batman, and they don’t need a lot of extra drama. Are we going to get a string of angsty films back to back for the next few years? Stick with the source material, respect the fans, and you’ll make a profit. That’s the recipe for box office success.

Paramount’s Shortlist to Direct Paranormal Activity 2

Ever since the abrupt exit of Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, we’ve been in the dark as to who Paramount will have take on the sequel to box office smash, Paranormal Activity. This morning a few interesting names popped up as possible candidates via The Los Angeles Times. A wide range of directors are being considered to direct the film ranging from well respected veterans to campy horror newbies.

Let’s start from the top and work our way down with the list of contenders. How about Brian De Palma? Yes, I’m talking about Scarface and Carrie De Palma. He’s done horror, he’s done action, he’s done drama, but can he do Paranormal Activity 2? If that’s not strange enough Akiva Goldsman was also thought at one point or another as a possible director for the film. He’s one of the most respected creative types in the business so reading his name came out of left field.

On the newbie front, we’ve got Greg McLean, the guy behind the Australian horror film Wolf Creek, and Brad Anderson who directed Transsiberian. No matter who they choose they’ve got to get this project moving because the script isn’t finished, and the cast hasn’t been filled. If they don’t want this project to be a victim of the sophomore jinx they need to nail down their talent.

On a side note, wouldn’t it be hilarious if De Palma did direct this film?

Hollywood Celebs Weisz, Law, Knightley Nominated for Olivier Awards

We get so used to see Hollywood stars like Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Keira Knightley on the big screen that sometimes we forget that they actually take their acting abilities and apply them… on stage! Seems like they’re doing well because all of the above mentioned celebs along with James Earl Jones and Melanie Chisholm aka Mel C of the Spice Girls, were among the nominees listed for Britain’s Laurence Olivier theater awards.

The Oliviers are equivalent to Broadway’s Tonys, they honor achievements in London theater, musicals, dance and opera and as one could imagine are quite prestigious!

All the actors have been shortlisted for their roles in class plays: Jones is nominated for best actor for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Law got himself a ticket for “Hamlet.” Weisz for “A Streetcar Named Desire” while Knightley is nominated in the supporting actress category for”The Misanthrope.” All of those are somewhat expected, the real odd one out is Melanie Chisholm who has been nominated for best actress in a musical, “Blood Brothers.” Sadly I haven’t seen it so I can’t judge. Sounds interesting though!

The nominees were announced today, check out the full list before. The winners will be announced March 21.

Newmarket Films buys Hesher

More sales have been made at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and the latest lucky property is Spencer Susser’s Hesher. The film about a hippie who forces himself onto an unsuspecting family, has landed a distribution deal from Newmarket Films. An official press release was just sent out announcing the purchase and we’ve got all the details…

PARK CITY, UT (January 28, 2010) – Nigel Sinclair and Chris Ball, Co-Chairmen of EMG, today announced Exclusive Media’s Newmarket Films has acquired U.S. rights to the Sundance favorite, HESHER, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Natalie Portman. The seven figure deal was reached early this morning following an extremely successful screening in Salt Lake City last night, and negotiated by WME Global and CAA on behalf of the film with Chris Ball and John Crye, Head of Acquisitions, on behalf of Newmarket.
Since premiering at the festival last Friday, the film has picked up momentum with the fan boy driven audience who respond to the character of HESHER.

This marks the second film penned by David Michod to receive enormous praise among audiences at Sundance, the other being Animal Kingdom. Check out Screencrave’s Hesher review.

Tarantino and Cotillard Honored at Palm Film Festival

The Palm Springs Film Festival will be one of the many award ceremonies to kick off the new year and they’ve already unveiled two of their biggest winners. According to a recent press release, Academy Award winning actress Marion Cotillard and writer-director Quentin Tarantino will be honored at next year’s gala.

Cotillard will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Actress Award for her distinguished French career as well as her performance in Rob Marshall’s musical, Nine. She’s already received accolades from other film boards including the Hollywood Foreign Press who gave her a best supporting actress nod for her work in the film. Past recipients of the Desert Palm Achievement Actress Award include Anne Hathaway, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts and Kate Winslet.

Tarantino will be honored with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award due to his eccentric career and latest film Inglorious Basterds.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner commented, “Quentin Tarantino is one of the most gifted, iconoclastic filmmakers of his generation, and with Inglourious Basterds, he’s created a hugely entertaining, revisionist take on history as it might have been. For this achievement, along with his ongoing contributions to contemporary cinema, we’re delighted to be honoring him with the Festival’s Sonny Bono Visionary Award.”

Past recipients of the Sonny Bono Visionary Award include Todd Field, Baz Luhrmann, M. Night Shyamalan, Gus Van Sant and Joe Wright. The Palm Springs Award Gala will take place on January 5th and will be hosted by “Entertainment Tonight’s” Mary Hart. The Awards Gala will honor previously announced honorees Jeff Bridges, T Bone Burnett, Mariah Carey, Morgan Freeman, Anna Kendrick, Helen Mirren, Jason Reitman and Jeremy Renner. The Festival runs January 5-18, 2010.

VOTD: Michael Bay Sells Victoria’s Secret

You know, it makes perfect sense. Michael Bay = Women in their underwear near explosions and high tech material. All those robots just get in the way of what he’s REALLY pointing the camera at… boobs, ass, high heels and arched backs. So why not hire him to do a completely over the top Victoria Secret’s ad? At least with a commercial he’s forced to have a decent run-time.

Some of you may have seen this ad already, but there was some discrepancies over whether or not Bay really directed it, or if it was just a Bay-wannabe. It has been confirmed that, yes, this commercial was actually directed by the big man himself.

The Wolfman International Trailer

This morning we’ve gotten our hands on the latest trailer for Joe Johnston’s horror film, The Wolfman. Be warned, it’s intended for French audiences (hence the subtitles) but have no fear, the entire trailer is in English. On top of that, there are a few scenes that include footage we haven’t seen from the previous videos.

Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother…and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

This version of the trailer is actually a lot more visually interesting than the other two. The old school horror vibe comes across wonderfully under Johnston’s direction. It would have been great if this was actually released around Halloween, instead of February due to Universal’s shuffled film schedule. The movie will have to duke it out with romantic comedies, which sounds like an unfair deal.

The Fourth Kind Featurette

We just posted our review for The Fourth Kind and it has been decided, this film is genuinely scary. The mixture of archived and fictional footage makes you unable to get away with your usual “this is just a movie” scapegoat and will leave you scared far after you walk out of the theater.

In honor of its release this Friday, Universal has just sent over a new video featurette via FEARnet.com. In it you’ll see paranormal writer/researcher Marie D. Jones discusses encounters of the fourth kind and learn why she says experts believe that these similar experiences can’t just be thought of as coincidence.

Megan Fox, Ryan Reynolds, Gerard Butler to Host SNL

A staple of the long running sketch series Saturday Night Live, involves each episode being hosted by a major film or TV star. This fall SNL will return to NBC for its 35th season, and the first four hosts of the show have already been announced. Transformers star Megan Fox, Ryan Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, and Gerard Butler have all been confirmed to appear on the New York stage opposite some of today’s top musical acts.

According to Hitfix, Megan Fox will kick off this year’s season by appearing on the September 26th premiere episode with U2 serving as the musical guest. Ryan Reynolds will host on October 3rd, with a performance by Lady Gaga, followed by Drew Barrymore on October 10th, and Gerard Butler on October 17th. As you can see the musical acts haven’t been confirmed for Barrymore or Butler.

This will be the sixth time that Barymore has hosted the show, the first being back in 1982 when she was just seven years old. She’ll be promoting her film Whip It, which co-stars SNL alum, Kristen Wiig. Butler will be on hand to promote his film Law Abiding Citizen, which will be opening that same weekend.

It’s been hard for me to consistently watch SNL due to their lack of original hosts, and the lagging material. I stopped being a dedicated viewer after the Tina Fey – Tracy Morgan era.

Overture just premiered the poster for Michael Moore’s new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story, on Fandango. The poster is very old school, everything from the graphics and background colors are reminiscent of the Hitchcock’s era. I wonder what more could be referring to? Possibly the backwards movement of America? Or the birth of Capitalism with the American dream? Or just that we’re about to see a real life horror film?

Eagle of the Ninth Begins Production

How did this little film starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, and Mark Strong, written by BAFTA Award-winning screenwriter Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland) and directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald slip by us for so long? We didn’t even hear about them casting Eagle of the Ninth, but everything is set and the crew is currently on location in Hungary and Scotland, and they have begun filming!

The film was adapted for the screen by Brock, off of Rosemary Sutcliff’s classic novel of the same name. For more on the story keep reading…

The Eagle of the Ninth is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (played by Mr. Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth.
Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Mr. Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. Mr. Sutherland portrays Marcus’ uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain; Mr. Strong is cast as Guern, an ex-soldier who holds crucial information about the Ninth.

Sounds kind of Lord of the Rings-ish, but with it’s own twist. Personally, with all the impressive talent behind the film, I don’t need to know what it’s about, just when it will be in theaters.

Weekend Box Office: Basterds Lead the Way

The Basterds smashed their way to number one this past weekend, sadly, not with the $50+ million they deserved, but number one none-the-less. It seems like a slow weekend for movie theaters, none of the numbers are that impressive. Robert Rodriguez’s kid’s film Shorts, had a slow start, it only managed to come up with $6 million. Meanwhile, G.I Joe hasn’t dropped out of the top three, but it still didn’t make much.
