You just never know these days whether that trailer your Sci-Fi geek cousin sent you is the real deal. It’s easy to be fooled by the fan-made trailers floating around the Internet because they seem like they could be legit! Some even go so far as to make it look like it was filmed in a theater, before a movie. Don’t worry, we’ve all been tricked by these fakie-trailer makers. And, now I’m giving them their props.

Here’s the Top Ten Ten Movie Trailers making the rounds right now, coming soon to an inbox near you.

10. Twilight: New Moon

Great in terms of suspense and editing, but there’s nothing really new here.

9. Watchmen

Again…This is more of a remix than it is a trailer, but it’s well done!

8. Star Trek

Yeah, okay, if it were real, they’d probably want to show off some of their cool casting (like Zachary Quinto as Spock) but I still think this one’s pretty good, although I would have liked to see some more original footage.

7. Cloverfield 2

The funny thing about this one is it’s not that different from the one studios put out. Oooh, it’s warbly! I’m so scared! I want to know if the backgrounds in this video were made or used from another film, because they look really great.

6. Batman 3

There are loads of fake trailers out there, and twice as many rumors surrounding the casting. I understand, people, you’re excited! But, calm down, it’ll be out soon enough. Although after the first Dark Knight teaser trailer, I could totally picture something like this for the next Batman movie.

5. Justice League

Really well done. The cuts between the actual footage and their own footage is a bit rough at times. Amazing angles, great locations. Really well done.

4. Saw V

I gave this one so much credit for the fake blood. That had to be a bitch to deal with.

3. Halo (2012?)

This movie has been “about to come out” forever. Is it or isn’t it? Some fan thinks so! They better hurry up and release it or a fan will make the whole movie, not just the trailer. (It’s official status is in production.)

2. The Flash

Apparently, this one ran in front of The Watchmen…which doesn’t come out until March of this year. Wow, amazing! It’s got to be real then, right? I love how they tried to get that “side angle” on their flat screen. Then the applause at the end just makes it priceless.

1. Thundercats

This is hysterical! They took Brad Pitt and Hugh Jackman and made them look all cat-like. Me-ow! It’s the winner because the voice over is just so damn well made. They have a plot, characters, and a voice that sounds like it should be reading for trailers. Plus the editing it amazing. A little silly but really well made.

*What do you think? Awesome or lame? Have you seen a good one we missed? Leave a comment and let us know!

2009 is going to be the year of the Badass. And what’s more badass than car chases? No, not like that scene in Grease. We’re talking real chases people. No racing, no traveling to random accidents… You know, good guys chasing bad guys. Bad guys chasing good guys. Bad guys chasing each other. On earth vehicles, not X-Wing Fighters or speed boats. Just classic scenes with fast freaking cars. Yeah!

Catch the top twelve best chase scenes after the jump.

12. C’était un rendez-vous (1976)

Cult classic French film that’s literally just a car chase. The Director made the film, released it, and then was arrested and jailed for it. No special effects and no dialogue. Not much of a plot, but dope to watch for our purposes. In this scene, speed through the streets of Paris and try to identify the landmarks as you careen past them. Arc de Triomphe? Check. Champs-Elysees? Check Check.

11. Quantum of Solace (2008)

Tunnels, shooting, trucks flying off mountains and shit. Yes! Badass James Bond car chasing at it’s best for your viewing pleasure.

10. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)

Nothing wrong with a little mini-van action, especially when that mini-van is filled with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in their underwear. In this hilarious chase scene, the two are arguing, shooting and maneuvering a freeway with assassins on their tail. Who says badass can’t be funny?

9. Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)

40, count ‘em, 40 minutes of car chases in this movie. Will that satisfy your need for speed? This cult classic is not the best flick in the world but the crazy ambitious police car verses Mustang (named Eleanor) chase scene makes it worth your while.

8. Dark Knight (2008)

Batmobile, bazookas and armored trucks all make for a badass chase scene in a badass movie! I mean, a helicopter even gets in on the action. Non-stop hip hop and awesomeness supreme. Heath Ledger is, of course, both hysterical and chilling in this scene.

7. The Italian Job (1969)

What do you get when you combine three Mini Coopers, two Jaguars, a bus and an Italian gold heist? One of the most famous chase scenes ever filmed, of course! This is the apex scene of the film, where you realize you’re rooting hardcore for the bad guys and you don’t feel bad about it at all. Yes!

6. Ronin (1998)

High speed chases down the streets of Paris? Wrong way action on the freeway? Seeing oodles of expensive cars like Porches and Mercedes decimated before your very eyes? If this sounds awesome, you’ll enjoy this little scene as much as I did.

5. Bullitt (1968)

Steve McQueen speeds around the streets of San Francisco in a Mustang chasing a Charger! Trolley cars, hills, taxi cabs and somehow the same green bug keep getting in the way but the chase it don’t stop! Super fun classic scene.

4. Matrix Reloaded (2003)

Trinity finally gets on the freeway in the best scene of the whole movie. 14 minutes of crazy driving, car crashes and shooting it up in the matrix. Nice. Plus, those twins are freaky-deaky.

3. Death Proof (2007)

Car chases don’t get much better than this. Kurt Russell and his murder-mobile decide to pick a fight with a trio of stunt chicks on a Texas highway. Ever seen a car chase where there’s a girl dangling off the hood? Better watch this pronto! Thank you Quentin Tarantino!

2. The Blues Brothers (1980)

Surely you’ve had a friend/brother/boyfriend quote this flick to you at some point in your life. Maybe, perhaps, during a trip to the mall? Well, you can blame this amazing iconic scene, in which Jake and Elwood are chased in a police car, by police cars through, yup, a mall. Pretty funny to watch them obliterate Toys R Us and Pier 1 Imports. “This place has got everything.”

1. The French Connection (1971)

This is a treacherous, reckless pursuit that ends up pitting Gene Hackman against a train! Absolutely riveting, this scene has raised the bar for all chase scenes following it to this day. But, more than that, this stellar scene exists inside a movie that is also fantastic. Watch the whole thing. Bad. Ass.

*Honorable Mention: Smokey & the Bandit (1977), The Bourne Identity (2002), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) all had chase scenes that got my motor running.

For every A Christmas Story, there are twenty pathetic overwrought holiday movies pumped out by the studios just to suck away any holiday spirit you had left. Think I’m being Scroogey? Turn on Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel and bask in the holiday grossness. Seriously, ask Melissa Joan Hart. She feels me.

Here’s my top 10 suckiest Christmas movie list. I left out the special made-for-TV gems because you have to sort through the bullshit somehow and I’m just trying to get through the holidays.

10. White Christmas (1954)

Is this your mostest favoritist movie in the whole wide world? I’m truly sorry. I think even the actors know how ridiculous this is. They have that “Saved By the Bell” kind of apologetic look in their eyes. The rip-off of Holiday Inn. Does it make you want to wash your hair in snow? Yeah, me too. Anything to make it stop!

9. Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

I’m sorry Ernest but…wow. Here’s the plot: Santa wants to retire and enlists Ernest’s help in finding his successor. Yup. I’ve seen better skits at open mic night in the NoHo “arts district”.

8. Eight Crazy Nights (2002)

I love Adam Sandler but he should be fined for this one because the world sorely needed a good Hanukkah movie (no, I don’t count that “Rugrats” one) and this just bites the big one. Bad musical numbers paired with even worse toilet-humor jokes; but the real rub is that it’s boring.

7. Jingle All the Way (1996)

It can be tempting to watch this when you catch it on cable. Don’t do it! You’ll just feel bad about yourself in the morning. And just think, we elected this guy Governor of California after he made this movie. Um?

6. The Family Man (2000)

I think the idea here was perhaps a modern version of It’s a Wonderful Life? But, it comes across as elitist, stupid and sappy, if such a combination is possible. Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni working with a script way beneath their incredible talents. Not even worth pushing that record button on your dvr. Just watch the classic.

5. Christmas With the Kranks (2004)

This is based on a novella by John Grisham, a cheesy but sweet little book that I’ll cop to reading on a flight home from the holidays. (My mom offered it up and I took it out of bookless desperation.) The movie captured nothing of the spirit of the story and any Christmas cred Tim Allen racked up in that fat suit he donned in The Santa Claus melted away like snowflakes with this little gem. It’s silly, painful and trite. Do yourself a favor and just read the book if you must. Or, better yet, take a sleeping pill. A flight attendant will be waking you in no time.

4. Surviving Christmas (2004)

2004 was a particularly suck year for Christmas movies, eh? I saw this one on a plane that year and let me just say that I will gratefully watch anything on a plane. (I hate planes.) This here flick had me wanting to jump out somewhere over freaking Albuquerque. Ben Affleck proves you can go back home again and you should do just that before watching this movie.

3. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Somehow, for some reason, someone thought it was a good idea to take twenty-five minutes of animated goodness and stretch it into one hundred and four minutes of live action messiness. I normally love the work of both Ron Howard and Jim Carrey but after sitting through this film, my heart shrunk three sizes that day. Dr. Seuss would not, could not approve.

2. Deck the Halls (2006)

Pretend you’re in a pitch meeting and you hear this: Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick are neighbors competing over their Christmas lights. Chaos, of course, ensues. Yes, please? I think this would’ve been shot down as an episode of “Two and a Half Men”. And, yet, it exists, folks. In full length feature form! Amazing. Now do you believe in Santa?

1. Polar Express (2004)

Again with the 2004. If I had a time machine, I would use it to go back to 2004 and make all Hollywood executives into Scrooges and Grinches and Christmas haters so that they wouldn’t greenlight any of this crap! My nephews made me watch this abomination and although I excuse them for their bad taste (they are 3 and 4 years old and obsessed with trains, after all), I cannot excuse Tom Hanks for agreeing to this creep-fest of a project. The kids in this make Chucky look sweet. Brings out the, um, polar opposite of Christmas spirit in me.

*Honorable Mention: These two escaped my wrath simply because they were made for TV. A Very Brady Christmas and Smoky Mountain Christmas (starring Dolly Parton). Astoundingly horrible! I might even go so far as to say the Dolly Parton one is so bad it flirts with good. You heard me, DP. Smooches.

Did I list your favorite? Wanna shoot my eye out? Let me know. Leave a comment and have a wonderful holiday!

‘Tis the season, folks! Not feeling it? It can be hard when it’s seventy-five degrees outside and the country’s in a recession. But, the holidays are here anyway, might as well get on board. What better to get you in the mood than some good holiday movies?

I need to come clean right away and admit that I haven’t seen Fred Claus, nor do I intend to. But, since I think I’ve sat through every other holiday movie out there, I feel comfortable counting down the Top 10 Best Holiday Movies. Gather round the television, pour some eggnog and watch one of these to jump start your holiday spirit. If these films don’t work, I recommend dressing your husband up like an elf. Cheers.

10. Scrooged (1988)

I don’t know about you, but when I think Christmas, I think Bill Murray! While I am completely and utterly sick of A Christmas Carol and all it’s many forms, I can still sit through this version, not because it’s a “good movie” but because I, um, like it. So there. It’s the classic Dickens tale but modernized, well 80′s-ized, and it has some very funny and also very dark moments. A witty retelling of a story that sorely needed a facelift.

9. Holiday Inn (1942)

No, not the Chingy song! Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire shine in this ultimate classic holiday film. Watch it to see musical numbers such as “White Christmas” (Yes, it was introduced here before it was in that other movie.) and “Happy Holidays.”

8. The Santa Clause (1994)

It took me fourteen years to see this movie. I couldn’t get past the idea of Tim Allen in a fat suit. But, I’m glad I finally watched it because it’s delightful. Scott Calvin “inherits” the job of Santa when the former job holder falls off his roof. The film might be on the ridiculous side but it’s got a lot of heart and is actually quite funny in parts. This would be a perfect choice if you’re watching with kids. The whole ‘children are wiser than adults’ angle will appeal to them.

7. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Tim Burton and Henry Selick created an instant classic for two holidays at once with this film, no easy feat. Although most people consider this a Halloween film, I think at it’s heart it is a Christmas story. When Jack Skellington discovers Christmastown for the first time, it’s as if the viewer is rediscovering Christmas all over again. Yes, it’s not your classic Christmas film but therein lies it’s appeal. Simply magical. Just what you need to get your holiday spirit back! Amazing music and lyrics by Danny Elfman, (also the singing voice of Jack).

6. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

This flick doesn’t get the props it deserves. With a little help from Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid, this hilarious film successfully captures both the warm fuzzy glow and the nausea-inducing dread that can accompany family time. It is, in my opinion, the funniest of the ‘Vacation‘ films and has so many laugh-out-loud scenes in it, it is impossible to choose a favorite. One to watch every year.

5. Elf (2003)

This film is the perfect combination of Will Ferrell comedy and holiday cheese. Ferrell’s Buddy the Elf is an especially endearing hero, one you will root for no matter how silly the set up. A good bet if you have a house full of hard-to-please relatives. Will Ferrell in yellow tights? Who can say no to that? Utterly charming, which is probably why it’s the #1 rented holiday film on Netflix.

4. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Both of my parents count this as their favorite Christmas film and I have to admit I adore it as well. Sentimental and sweet, this movie will make you believe in Santa Claus! There have been a few remakes but the original is where it’s at with fantastic performances by Maureen O’Hara and a young Natalie Wood. Fight the power, Kris Kringle!

3. Love Actually (2003)

Yes, it’s overblown and perhaps a bit trite but I actually love Love Actually. While the rest of the year we may scoff at romance and happy endings, around the holidays a little hope is in order and this film delivers in abundance. Even if you hate one of the story lines, you’ll be charmed by the other ten. An astounding ensemble cast and a fast pace ensure you’ll be smitten.

2. It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

Frank Capra‘s holiday classic is one film pretty much everyone can agree on. A viewing of this delightful movie is as Christmas-y as candy canes and mistletoe. Jimmy Stewart‘s portrayal of the flawed but lovable George Baily is one the greater performances of all time. The gosh-darn heart-warming message doesn’t hurt either.

1. A Christmas Story (1983)

Go ahead and ask your friends and family what their favorite holiday movie is. Nine times out of ten you’ll get this film as your answer. And, in my opinion, the one dude that answers “White Christmas” is probably just trying to sound cool. Nostalgic and funny, this film illustrates what it’s like to be a kid at Christmas-time, not just in the 40′s but in any decade. Fan-freaking-tastic holiday fun.

*Honorable Mention: The TV Specials that are not technically movies (with an average running time 25 minutes) but warm our hearts nonetheless. Shout out to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Is your favorite missing? Leave a comment and tell us what film makes you filled with holiday cheer!

How old do you have to be to be too old for a High School movie? Pretty freaking old is what I’m thinking. Some of the best movies around can be stuck into this special little category. This is a group that dominates both our hearts and the box office. My original brainstorming list had 27 movies on it. I had to be talked down to 10 my girl Rox (Thanks!) and a lot of research because I felt that I simply couldn’t cut any of the films from the gigantic list. It hurt my soul to whack some of them. But, here’s what it boiled down to, the best of the best. Is your favorite missing? Then, stop muttering at your computer screen and leave a comment! Represent!

10. Superbad (2007)

If you weren’t charmed by McLovin’, your heart is made of ice. That’s the only explanation. Awkward coming-of-age goodness with a heavy side of dirty talk. Michael Cera and Jonah Hill are adorable, unlikely heroes for a whole new generation of teenagers, a fact that helps me sleep at night.

9. Election (1999)

This dark comedy is witty and cutting and leaves you with a funny feeling in your stomach, and not just from laughing so hard. Reese Witherspoon‘s Tracy Flick is such a spot-on portrayal of that Type A loser you hated in high school, you’ll want to cheer and puke.

8. Dazed and Confused (1993)

It’s the last day of school at a Texas high school in the 1970′s. What’s there to do? Party at the moon tower! Richard Linklater has made my life complete with his hilarious and nostalgic tribute to the good ole’ days. (It will make you happy no matter what year you graduated, trust me.) Watch it for the amazing ensemble cast and to count the weed references. That would be a great drinking game if you are so inclined. You should probably get on that.

7. Pretty In Pink (1986)

Quintessential New Wave viewing. This film was completely necessary for kids in the 80′s to learn the proper way to wear broaches without looking like Grandma. Director John Hughes and his muse Molly Ringwald tell a story that is perhaps cliche but ultimately hopeful. I am forever on Team Duckie.

6. Rushmore (1998)

I think this is Wes Anderson‘s best flick so far and the performances by Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman are straight up brilliant. It’s funny as hell but there’s something so real and pathetic about these characters that it almost makes you depressed. Almost. You won’t have any trouble both laughing at and rooting for them.

5. Clueless (1995)

Amy Heckerling does it Beverly Hills style with this precious but snarky look at high school life for rich kids. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is sweet and, aptly clueless but you’ll be sucked right into the world and the plot. It’s so much fun to watch. Just try not to say “As if,” afterward in public. Because you’ll, like, look dumb.

4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

John Hughes says another high school f-you to the establishment in this excellent comedy. Matthew Broderick stars as Ferris Bueller, perhaps the most lovable teen of all time. This film takes a crime like skipping school, holds it up before the light, and pronounces it necessary!

3. Heathers (1989)

The poster child for Cult Classic, this is one of those films you wouldn’t dare put down in, say my presence. A dark, biting satire with a great cast (Winona Ryder, Christian Slater), this movie takes all your teen-angst urges and makes them a reality. Flippin’ awesome.

2. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

Nerds rock! This film will take you to that painful laughter place. You know the one I mean, where you think you might die but you’re stoked. The movie has a timeless feel to it, where the characters could be trapped in the 80′s, or, as is the case here, in Iowa. Classic underdog-makes-good formula outrageously geekified.

1. The Breakfast Club (1985)

Like Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit but for teenagers. Detention is like hell, right? In John Hughes’ masterpiece, five kids from different cliques work out their problems in one long, hilarious day. You cannot help but love this flick. Seriously, you can’t. If you say you don’t like it, I think you’re lying. Maybe you should spend a day in detention and think about what you’ve done.

Honorable Mention: Juno (2007), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Mean Girls (2004) and The Outsiders (1983).

Ah yes, Experiment 626, a.k.a. Stitch, an alien who escapes lock-down and ends up in a Hawaiian dog pound. This guy loves Elvis, can surf and is as cute as he is funny. The film may be on the sappy side but Stitch is way cool. What’s not to love? Kowabunga, dude.

9. Yautja from Predator Franchise (1987-2007)

This bad boy species is from the other side of the Milky Way and has been coming to Earth to hunt for who knows how long. But, it doesn’t really matter where he’s from. This is one scary alien who can make himself invisible and has a vast knowledge of weaponry; not the kind-of guy you’d want to meet in a dark alley.

8. Frank the Pug from Men In Black Franchise (1997-2002)

Good ole’ Frank the Pug is actually a Remoolian disguised as a dog. Frank appears in both of the Men In Black films as first an informant and then as an employee of the MIB agency. Because pugs look like aliens anyway and because this pug rocks it, I think he’s the best extra-terrestrial in the franchise. His rendition of “I Will Survive” (above) alone makes me want to throw him a bone.

7. The Thermians from Galaxy Quest (1999)

This hilarious Star Trek spoof spotlights a race of aliens known as The Thermians who become obsessed with the television show Galaxy Quest, mistaking the episodes for “historical documents.” Hilarity, of course, ensues. The Thermians are a hysterical and strangely gullible race that speaks in a monotone, yet sing-songy voice you have to hear to believe.

6. Chewbacca from Star Wars Franchise (1977-2008)

Chewbacca (Chewy), a pilot from the planet Kashyyyk, is from noble Wookiee lineage, don’t ya know? Chewy is one of the most popular characters from the franchise, even though he only speaks in grunts and growls. Perhaps it’s because this Wookiee is noble and brave and might be the cuddliest alien ever. (Take that, Alf.)

5. Superman from Superman Franchise (1978-2006)

Superman, a.k.a. Kal El, is from the planet Krypton but was sent to Earth moments before his planet’s destruction. He was raised on a farm as Clark Kent, a simple guy that prefers glasses to tights and a cape. But, to the delight of humankind, he lets his alter-ego out sometimes. He can fly and he has super-human strength and all the jazz but he looks like a human. A hot human.

4. The Alien from Alien Franchise (1979-2007)

This lovely alien is a Xenomorph, a “parasitoid extraterrestrial species,” which basically means that this alien just wants to kill and have babies. Well, actually they kill to have babies, as illustrated in the clip above. Lovely! One of the scariest monsters ever to appear onscreen and you barely even see them for much of the first film. Fantastic scary alien fun!

3. The Martians from Mars Attacks! (1996)

These little dudes are awesome and cute, with their big heads, crazy voices and death-ray guns. Pretty much the quintessential aliens, the Martians deliver the camp and style you want with your invasion. When they carved their bug-eyed faces into Mount Rushmore, I was in love.

2. Spock from Star Trek Franchise (1966-now)

True, he’s only half alien (Vulcan, to be precise) but Spock is perhaps the most watched alien of all time. On both the television series and in the Star Trek films, Spock steals the show with his pointed ears and logical nature. Spock’s also got Vulcan skills like superhuman strength and mind-melding. That’s hot.

1. E.T. from E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial (1982)

E.T. accidentally gets left behind when his spaceship has to motor. But, this alien loves to party so he spends his time on Earth getting drunk off Coors, eating Reese’s Pieces and making bikes fly. E.T. has other skills as well like moving objects and bringing plants back from the dead. He even made his own cell phone out of a Speak & Spell! Not a bad guy to have around. E.T. rocks!

*Honorable Mention: Coneheads, The Blob, and the hot chic from Species. Oh, and Tyra Banks.

Who is your favorite alien life form? Leave a comment and let us know who you think is out of this world.

I have a confession to make. I was a theater major in college. Yep, complete with a Les Miserables shirt and debates about the merits of Madonna as Eva Peron in the greenroom between classes. Perhaps it was because my mom made me listen to too much Fiddler on the Roof and Jesus Christ Superstar when I was little? (That’s it, blame the parents.) My passion for movie musicals is merely the culmination of my two loves: film and non-plot advancing song and dance numbers! Like, OmG!

Here are the 10 Movie Musicals I think are the best of the best. This is based on the oh-so-scientific criteria of how much I love the film so if your favorite is missing, by all means, leave a comment and let us what makes you want to spontaneously break into song. Come on, I showed you mine…

10. Moulin Rouge! (2001)

This film is a frantic, glitzy, over-the-top music video. But, it works. Songs you recognize stuck into a plot set in 1899 Paris and all tied together with Baz Luhrmann‘s special brand of magic. It’s so wrong that it’s oh-so-right. I adore this film and I think it contends with more “classic” musicals any day.

9. Mary Poppins (1964)

Classic Disney sweetness with an extra spoonful of sugar! Who doesn’t love Mary Poppins? Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are simply superb. This is one of those movies that deserves all the accolades it has received over the last forty years. Wow, forty years? That nanny’s old but still awesome.

8. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

I’m a major Sondheim fan and Sweeney Todd is my favorite, so it was with a knot of excitement and dread in my stomach that I watched Tim Burton‘s version of this dark, spooky tale unfurl. Nailed it! It is simply delightful, paying careful tribute to the stage version but forging it’s own way with a great cast and a sense of humor shining through the murk. “Have a Little Priest” is spot-on! Watch for a great performance by Alan Rickman.

7. My Fair Lady (1964)

Audrey Hepburn may not actually sing in this movie but she sure does charm. Just try and watch it without being won over by Eliza Doolittle! “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Get Me To the Church On Time” are show stoppers. Super cute and still as fun today as when you were a child.

6. Singing In the Rain (1952)

This film is a dose of sunshine and who couldn’t use that now and again? Gene Kelly stars in this classic Hollywood musical and I really don’t think anyone has ever been cuter on screen. Classic songs such as “Good Morning, Good Morning” and, of course, “Singing In the Rain” keep you tapping your feet while watching. There’s also an amazing dance number with the lovely Cyd Charisse. Mandatory viewing for any movie lover!

5. The Sound of Music (1965)

When you think “musical”, you probably think of this classic escapist film. The Von Trapp Family sing their way into your heart in this Rodgers and Hammerstein stunner. Say what you will about this movie being corny or sugar-coated, but I’ll bet you’ve hummed “My Favorite Things” a couple of times.

4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

“Let’s do the time warp again!” Oh, man, this cult-classic delivers the goods. Even if you’ve never been to an audience participation viewing of this flick, you’ll still appreciate the spunky dance numbers, the wonderful characters and the full-on camp that this movie bombards you with. It’s like the anti-Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Watch this and The Sound of Music back to back. Tim Curry vs. Julie Andrews smack down! Yes!

3. Guys and Dolls (1955)

Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra (with Stubby Kaye as Nicely Nicely Johnson!) bring the Broadway show to the screen in a big way. Great songs you’ll recognize like “Luck Be A Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat,” combine with a cute, heartwarming plot to ensure you’ll be smitten. Vivian Blaine turns in an amazing performance as Miss Adelaide.

2. Annie (1982)

Fun, lighthearted version of the Broadway show with great performances by Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan and Tim Curry as her brother Rooster. The kids are pretty darn cute too. Yes, this film is cheese-tastic, but it also has a lot of heart. It doesn’t hurt if you grew up in the ’80s but even if you didn’t, give Annie a chance to win you over. Yes, there’s that “Tommorrow” song, but there’s also the orphan’s “Hard Knock Life” and Miss Hannigan’s drunken “Little Girls” to make you smile.

1. Grease (1978)

Grease is not just another movie musical, but the anthem of a generation. How ironic is it that the theme song of Gen X is from a movie set in the 50′s? Don’t believe me? Have you been to a karaoke bar in the last 10 years without hearing “Summer Lovin’”? John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John star as Danny and Sandy, respectively, and provide valuable life lessons. Now we know you should always change yourself for a man, just like Sandy did when she got the perm and took up smoking for Danny. Thanks Grease! Mwah!

*Honorable Mention: Chicago and West Side Story.

*Musicals to watch alone with the curtains drawn: Grease 2 and Newsies.

If you have children or know any children, you know that they are losing their brains over Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa coming out over the weekend. Hooray for good animated movies! Over the years, I have been forced to sit through many horrible animated films by my dear sweet nephews. My animation snob husband, on the other hand, has bombarded me with tons of good animated films I wouldn’t have known existed otherwise. While the bad ones may be horrid (Polar Express anyone?), the good ones are really good and it was difficult to narrow them down to a list of 10 but I did my best.

Here are 10 animated films that grown ups will dig, even if most of them were intended for kiddos. Sit back, relax and enjoy a DVD that doesn’t have a smiling tank engine in it for once.

10. Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Grab this on DVD today. It’s really funny and the fight scenes are so well executed that you almost forget you’re watching a panda battle a snake and feel like you’re watching an actual Kung Fu film. The stunt casting actually works well in this film. You can’t imagine any other voice than Jack Black’s as the lovable Po.

9. Toy Story (1995)

Even though this is clearly a kid’s movie, Toy Story also appeals to even the surliest adult. With it’s clever premise and familiar characters, this film draws you right into the world of the toy. If you ever owned a toy or if you were ever a child, you’ll like this one.

8. The Simpsons Movie (2007)

They had me at ‘Spider Pig’. And, it just gets funnier from there. This film is everything you love about an episode of The Simpsons, only better.

7. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)

An obnoxious, hilarious, satirical but somehow sweet musical starring your favorite 4th graders. Trey Parker and Matt Stone bring the wit and social commentary they are known for on the show to the big screen and freakin’ rock it. If you haven’t seen it yet, shame on you. But you probably have, so just let me say it is worthy of a re-watch. Come to think of it, this is so on my Christmas List…hint-hint.

6. Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003)

A visually astounding film. The character design alone in this movie will blow you away. One of those rare flicks (animated or not) that make you marvel at the creativity required to construct something so full of life out of thin air. Quite charming. I’m charmed if you couldn’t tell and you will be too.

5. Disney’s Robin Hood (1973)

Nostalgic, yes, but Robin Hood still entertains. Although this is a film you could certainly watch with your favorite 5-year-old, I would argue that to adults, a viewing of this film is like cheap therapy, a balm for your soul. Watch the little gallant fox and escape to Nottingham for awhile! In my opinion, this is one of Disney’s best and I never grow tired of watching it.

4. The Iron Giant (1999)

A completely under-the-radar film from the amazing Brad Bird, The Iron Giant can make grown men cheer then cry. A robot, a boy, and a message all ensure you’ll be captivated.

3. The Incredibles (2004)

What’s not to like about this fast-paced and clever Pixar film? This movie delighted both my mother and my husband, which is like getting my dog and cat to agree on a whining schedule. I know children enjoy this movie but, let’s face it, the jokes are for us adults. The beauty of The Incredibles is the excellent execution of a solid story, which appeals to everyone.

2. Spirited Away (2001)

Oh, Miyazaki, I love you so! While Miyazaki classics like My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki’s Delivery Service are arguably kid-oriented, Spirited Away has more adult themes. The film is enchanting and deep, with a great story that doesn’t spell it out for you, morally speaking. The magical bathhouse for spirits is a dark and lovely setting for this beautiful tale. A stunning film all around.

1. Monster’s, Inc. (2001)

Pixar is at it’s best with a superbly witty premise and a sweet compelling tale to tell. The monsters are crazy affable and “Boo”, the human child is the cutest, most realistic kid you’ll ever see in an animated movie. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve watched this movie but I’m sure the number is embarrassingly high. You can’t help but fall in love.

Honorable Mention: Beavis and Butthead Do America, Grave of the Fireflies, Over the Hedge

‘Tis the sportiest of seasons. Yes, baseball is over, but the TV schedule is still jam-packed with football, basketball and hockey. It’s enough to make sports fans salivate and their sports-challenged significant others cringe and hide the remote. What’s a sports fan to do? I say, do you really need to watch The Kings lose again when America’s Next Top Model is on? (Did I type that out loud?)

Anyway, there is one sure fire way to get your honey to watch some form of sports with you. Trick them by putting in a sports movie! They’ll be so wrapped up in the plot they won’t even realize that someone on that screen is trying to put a ball/puck/fist in some sort of hole/net/face. Don’t worry, these have all been pre-approved by me. I’ve sat through and enjoyed them all without even whining!

10. Kingpin (1996) Bowling

While it’s true that this movie is not short on the vulgarity, your girl will like it anyway. (Give her a little credit, gah!) It’s funny and let’s face it, bowling is barely a sport. This is a great Farrelly Brothers romp with a fantastic cast. Randy Quaid is ridiculous as an Amish bowling savant and Bill Murray is the perfect bad guy. Loves it.

9. The Sandlot (1993) Baseball

Every guy I know secretly loves this movie and I truly believe even the most avid sports-hater in your life will be charmed by this flick. The kids are adorable and the themes are sentimental, but somehow The Sandlot manages to be exciting and funny without being too heavy on the schmultz. Your honey might shed a tear or two but they’ll accidentally swallow some baseball knowledge with their tears. You’re so sneaky.

8. Remember the Titans (2000) Football

You’ll laugh, someone will cry and you guys can wax philosophical about how creepy it is that Hayden Panettiere looks exactly the same 8 years later. This film has the classic sports movie formula working for it and against it, but mainly for it. The fact that it’s based on a true story helps give it street cred. Denzel Washington is at his most comfortable best here as the coach of the first integrated sports team in Virginia.

7. Miracle (2004) Hockey

Disney does hockey again, but this time it’s a true story. By the time your girlfriend is done watching this, she will be proud to be an American again. Kurt Russell shines as the coach of the U.S. Olympic Hockey team. Another plus, you like hockey and your gal likes a movie with tons of young hot dudes, right? It’s win-win. How sporty is that?

6. Rudy (1993) Football

I dare you not to love this movie! Sean Astin stars as Rudy, the underdog Notre Dame fan who dreams of playing with the big boys. This is my father’s favorite sports movie, as well as the only film about sports that my twenty-something female neighbor could remember the name of. Seriously, anyone with a pulse would like this one.

5. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) NASCAR

Don’t mess with Ricky Bobby, y’all. NASCAR is one of the most popular sports in America. But, to your non-sporty love, this is just a Will Ferrell movie that happens to have some cars in it. Silly, funny and shamelessly white trash, this flick will make you want to do a kegstand. John C. Reilly and Sacha Baron Cohen rock the party and Ferrell is brilliant as usual. Shake and bake, baby!

4. Rocky (1976) Boxing

This classic film has heart and chicks love heart. While it is about boxing, Rocky is also about love and your sweetheart will definitely dig the love story between Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire. I’ve heard Rocky described as the ultimate guy movie but I think anyone can appreciate the tale of an underdog who fights to overcome odds. Just in case, you might want to serve wine or cosmos with this one.

3. Caddyshack (1980) Golf

Contrary to popular belief, girls love to watch Caddyshack, particularly when compared to watching actual golf! Hey, there are funny guys (Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase) and what girl doesn’t love a cute little fuzzy animal? It’s classic and silly but still funny, even after all these years.

2. Hoosiers (1986) Basketball

Another true story, this time featuring a high school basketball team from (you guessed it) Indiana. Gene Hackman is the coach who cares and Dennis Hopper turns in an Oscar-winning performance as his drunk assistant coach. If this movie were not about sports, I would argue it’s a chick-flick because of the love story between Hackman and Barbara Hershey (Hello! Beaches!) and the general tear-jerkerness. She’ll heart it. Like, totally.

1. Field of Dreams (1989) Baseball

This is it. The perfect sports movie to watch with a non-sporty female because it’s like a baseball fairy tale. There’s the fantasy aspect of the film to focus on, plus most ladies are okay with Kevin Costner. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll get laid. Yay.

Honorable Mention: Invincible (Mark Wahlberg is the epitome of chick friendly), Raging Bull, and Tin Cup. Bonus Points for ya’ if you admit cheerleading is a sport and rent Bring It On for your ladyfriend.

I have a thing for vampires. There, I said it. Er, typed it. And, what better to way to get ready for Halloween than to curl up on the couch with a nice cozy bloodsucker flick? So, pour yourself some red wine, pull out those old black lace clothes from when you thought you were goth and get ready for 10 Vampire Movies That Don’t Suck. (Oh, vampire humor. It’s biting. Yes, I went there.) Let’s do this.

10. Shadow of the Vampire (2000)

This film is delightful and dark, just the way a vampire film should be. Far from your normal bloodsucker fare, this movie illustrates what could have happened during the filming of the classic film, Nosferatu (see #5 on this list). When an actual vampire is cast in the lead role, the result is a tale both clever and horrible. Great performances by John Malkovich, Willem DeFoe and Eddie Izzard. Even if vampire movies aren’t your thing, you’ll enjoy this one.

9. Blade (1998)

Terminator meets Buffy? This campy movie is heavy on the cheese but so much fun to watch. Virtual vampire fluff, this movie stars Wesley Snipes as Blade, the reluctant and noble vampire that is committed to saving the human race from his own kind. Be prepared for loads of snarky one-liners and brooding looks from Snipes. Fight scenes and bloody action sequences conspire to hold your attention. There’s even a vampire nightclub. You won’t be able to tear yourself away.

8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

Okay, it’s not the tv show but I’d like to argue that this film is bad in a good way. It’s, like, totally tubular. With the “Valley girl fights vampires” plot, reliable Joss Whedon wit and an excellent performance by Paul Reubens (yes, Peewee), you’ll end up sucked right in. Haha, I said “sucked”.

7. Nightwatch (Nochnoy dozor) (2004)

Even though there’s an obvious sci-fi/fantasy slant on this film, it is heavy on the vampires and thus, still counts as a vampire movie. This is the first film in a Russian trilogy chronicling your basic good vs. evil epic battle for planet earth. (Think vampires in The Matrix.) Nice special effects and an intriguing, bizarro plot to hold your interest and leave you thirsty for more.

6. From Dusk Til Dawn (1996)

Robert Rodriguez (director) and Quentin Tarantino (writer) at their wacky storytelling best here with a crazy cool cast (Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, Salma Hayek and Julliette Lewis, to name a few). Two fugatives cross the border and end up smack in the middle of a vampire nest. Vampire strippers? Check. Huge bloody showdown? Check check. If you’ve never seen this film, educate yourself immediately. Your life will not be complete until you’ve experienced the crazy that is From Dusk Til Dawn.

5. Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)

Chances are you’ve seen excerpts from this classic horror film, or at least caught one of the myriad of copycats out there. But, this is it, folks, the quintessential vampire film. Like the creatures themselves, this film is as old as dirt and still stirring. (Most people would place it at the top of this list but I stuck it in the center of mine, simply because I can only watch it every 10 years or so.) However, it still holds up as a haunting and dark tribute to the vampire. If you’re crazy enough to just watch one vampire film in your life, it should be Nosferatu.

4. Underworld (2003)

The premise alone takes me right to movie heaven. Lycans (Werewolves) vs. Vampires in a battle as old as time, right under the noses of us boring humans! Yes! I adore this film and will readily admit my dvd player is intimately familiar with it. Starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman, this movie grabs you by the jugular and doesn’t let go. There’s a nice history of vampires and werewolves that is quite interesting and even haters will admit the movie is visually stunning. You’ll love the intense performance by Bill Nighy as an old-ass vampire rising from an age-long slumber.

3. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Francis Ford Coppala retells the classic story of Dracula and makes it even sexier! Gary Oldman stars as the coolest Dracula ever with Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins rounding out the cast. Gothic, dark and saturated with tragic romance, this movie convincingly captures the very essence of the book. Tom Waits as Renfield is an extra treat. When I think “Dracula”, I think of Oldman in this film.

2. Interview with the Vampire (1994)

I like to think this endorsement carries more weight coming from me, because I am the biggest Anne Rice fan in the history of the earth. Even with the strange casting, this film perfectly encompasses the spirit of the novel and holds its own amongst other vampire tales and good movies in general. There are surprisingly grand performances in this flick from Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and, of course, Kristen Dunst, who’s interpretation of Claudia is nothing short of inspired. A full-bodied immersion into another universe, capable of making the viewer obsessed with the vampires instead of afraid of them. Stunning.

1. The Lost Boys (1987)

This wonderful film might just have more delightful one-liners than any other in history. How can it not be number 1? A young, hot vampire gang running rampant in California…what could be better? Starring Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric and (Holy crap!) both Coreys, The Lost Boys is campy blood drinking fun with just the right amount of creepy. “Don’t invite a vampire into your house, silly boy! It renders you powerless.” Hells yeah!

We’ve all seen the “Best Horror Movie” lists that come out every year around this time. Inevitably those things are full of films you probably would’ve liked if you’re John McCain’s age and saw them in black and white when they came out. (And you were probably just stoked that they were, um, talkies.) But, if you watch most of those old films today, you’ll be more likely to snooze than to scream. So, I present for your consideration, the Top Ten “Most Fun to Watch” Horror Movies. “Most Fun” means exactly what you think it means. A cop out? Perhaps. But, at least I don’t have to include Rosemary’s Baby.

So, without further ado, here are 10 films to rock your Halloween. (See Mom, the years of exhaustive research have paid off!) Pick one or rent all ten:

10. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)~ I realize that putting this on any best horror film list is akin to listing New York Minute as an example of great cinematography. However, this movie has all the elements of a good slasher flick. It’s actually pretty scary and what child of the 90′s doesn’t want to watch a creepy fisherman dude try to kill Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddy Prince Jr.? Yes! If this is on cable, I will stop whatever I’m doing to watch. (Great for parties, make up a drinking game!)

9. Jeepers Creepers (2001)~ If you’ve never seen this and you’re afraid of movies made before 1999, this is your rental. I resisted seeing this flick because a murderous scarecrow just seemed silly but when I finally watched it, I found myself sucked right in. The actors really bring it, the pace is good and scarecrow man is actually super scary. After watching this, you’ll jump every time you encounter an old truck with a loud horn on a deserted highway. Because, you know, that happens a lot in real life.

8. High Tension (2003)~ This raw French horror flick is somehow enhanced by the creepy English dub, which you get used to after about 5 minutes. Two college friends go to a secluded farmhouse to stay with family on their break from school. After a psychopath shows up and starts the brutal bloody murdering, the horror doesn’t stop for the rest of the film. This is not your typical horror flick; this is intense gore-on-overdrive, folks. Not for the faint of heart. (Side note…I’m not in love with the ending but I’m willing to overlook it because the rest is so overwhelmingly awesome.)

7. Saw (2004)~ I dare you to figure out the surprise ending of this one. Serial killer, “Jigsaw”, in his first movie of the franchise, plays with the lives of two men by forcing them to submit to his perverted games to save the lives of their loved ones. This film is innovative, entertaining and so freaking scary! Even after you’ve seen it once and know how it ends, it’s still fun to watch. If you like horror movies, you’ll like Saw. (The first one, anyway.)

6. Wrong Turn (2003)~ This movie never got the props it deserves. It’s terrifying! Let’s face it, there is nothing scarier than “cannibalistic mountain men grossly disfigured through generations of in-breeding,” (imdb) and watching these young hot people frantically run for their lives through the deserted Virginia woods is about much horror-movie fun as you can hope for. It gets pretty gory, as expected. You’ll never take that shortcut again!

5. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)~ It’s been over 20 years since I was first introduced to Freddy Kruger, and I still cannot think of him before falling asleep! In this classic Wes Craven film, Freddy stalks kids in their nightmares, creating some of the best death scenes on film. (Anyone remember the ceiling? The phone? O.M.G!) If you’ve never seen it, run out and rent it immediately. If it’s been awhile, it’s worth a re-watch. Yes, it’s campy. Yes, you’ll laugh just as much as you jump, but this movie is nothing if not “fun to watch.”

4. The Shining (1980)~ While not quite like the other films on this list, this amazing movie is still considered a classic horror film and worthy of a “most fun” listing because it’s still scary as hell! It holds up in a way that films made ten years later do not. Jack Nicholson, as the innkeeper, will still give you nightmares today as effectively as he did twenty eight years ago. Mucho bang for your horror buck. Red Rum, yo!

3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974, 2003) Because I’m from Texas and because I have a special place in my heart for the original, I’m willing to give it a shout-out. But, for pure scary fun, the 2003 Jessica Biel remake has my undying love. It’s everything good about the original, just polished up and more terrifying. The same basic plot (Leatherface, chainsaw, you know…) but with more gore and a fabulous young hot cast. You’ll love it and you can forget about sleeping that night.

2. Scream (1996) It doesn’t get much better than this. Oh, Wes Craven, I’ll love you forever for making this movie, a classic who-done-it teenage slasher flick! Who is it? Who’s trying to kill Sidney Prescott?!! This film really has it all. It’s campy, fast-paced and scary with a wicked sense of humor. Perfect for someone who loves horror movies, this self-aware film makes fun of the whole genre while still managing to make you jump. A great cast makes this film rock hard. Like, dude.

1. Halloween (1978) In my opinion, Michael Myers is the scariest on screen villain of all time. This classic film by John Carpenter still holds up 30 years later as a chilling look at the mind of a psychopath. With shots you will never get out of your brain and a great performance by a young Jaime Lee Curtis, this film crushes the competition. It’s compelling, it’s scary, it’s, um, perfect! It’s also believable in a way that most horror movies fail to be. Michael Myers could be a real serial killer. The story of Halloween could be true. And, that, my friends, is why it’s the best and the scariest. Mwaahaahaaaa!

*Here are the Honorable Mentions that didn’t quite make the cut (mainly because they just aren’t as scary in 2008, but I still have feelings for them): Pet Sematary, Silver Bullet, Poltergeist, and Friday the 13th.

So, what’s your favorite? Leave a comment and tell me what you think the most fun horror movie is. I’d love to hear what you think!

**Special Thanks to my ‘Horror Film Comrades’ Rox, Edi and Crystal-Pistol, who offered advice and suggestions in the compiling of this list. Roo-roo, ladies.

This is an opportunity to set the record straight and talk about what I’ve been through and where I’m headed.” Oh, and there’s that album that’s dropping on December 2. But, I’m not trying to hate on Britney. You know I’m tivo-ing that thing.

Paris Hilton wants you to know, FYI, she doesn’t change BFF Nicole’s daughter’s diapers. “Nicole is, like, the best mother. She’s so hands on, so she does that“, she told Tyra Banks. “I’ve never changed anyone’s diapers.” I am, like, shocked. For other compelling glimpses into the life of Paris, watch The Tyra Banks Show today to catch the interview.

J.Lo and Marc Anthony renew their vows in Vegas. Awwww. This past weekend, the two re-tied the knot in a penthouse in Ceasar’s Palace at around 3:30 a.m. Also present and renewing vows were their pals Carlos Beltran and his wife Jessica. Those crazy kids! Jenny from the block was getting faded in Vegas, right? Wild times. Two Midori Sours and a, um, vow renewal. Bitchin’. A source said, “It was very intimate and sweet. They both talked about how much they love each other. The word ‘forever’ was used a lot!”
