At this point, almost major actor will either be in the mix for or star in a franchise movie, and more often than not comic book characters. Where it was once dangerous to be associated with a superhero as it might define your career, now it just means you’re likely to sign a nine picture contract. Which is what makes the trailer for Birdman so intriguing.
Here Michael Keaton plays a former superhero actor who is haunted by his past and may be insane. That the film is playing on Keaton’s history as Batman definitely gives it an edge, but also what makes it interesting is that it comes from director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. He’s been known for his more serious films like Babel and 21 Grams, whereas this definitely seems more drawn from the Michel Gondry school of cinema. And that’s exciting. Here’s the trailer:
And then there’s that cast, with fellow superhero veterans Edward Norton and Emma Stone along with Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan and Naomi Watts. What will make or break this film is how funny it is, and we haven’t seen Inarritu do a comedy before, but he’s assemble a crazy amount of talent, and heck, we’re just happy to have Keaton back in a leading Role. Birdman or (The Unexpected Value of Ignorance) hits theaters October 17.
