The Giver

The latest trailer for The Giver is fascinating as it is definitely in the mode of all the recent young adult stories and films that have been made of late, and it also lays on the symbolism like a syrup. Mmmm, syrup.

Brenton Thwaites stars as Jonas, who lives in a black and white world (literally) where life is routine and dull, but he’s got a spark which leads him to meeting The Giver (Jeff Bridges) who teaches Jonas about lots of things, but that knowledge might be dangerous to everyone as the Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) insists. But how could it be bad if it means seeing in color? Oh, there’s also a girl (Odeya Rush), and some celebrity cameos (Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård and Taylor Swift). Here’s that trailer:

It’s possible the first twenty or thirty minutes of the movie are actually in black and white, which would be an interesting stylistic choice, but director Phillip Noyce has shown he can be a talented filmmaker over the years, even if his career makes him a journeyman (and sometimes hack). But also, if you know anything about this genre, this seems to follow that map, with evil parental figures and a special child whose gifts thrust them into the center of a revolution, though what’s fascinating here are the borderline religious overtones. We’ll see how strong they are when the film hits theaters August 15.
