This is Where I Leave You stars Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Corey Stoll, Rose Byrne, Timothy Olyphant, Connie Britton, Dax Shepard and more going by this trailer, and we like most of these people. Hopefully they deliver something more engaging than this trailer.
The film was directed by Shawn Levy, and we thought Real Steel was a turning point in his career as that movie is well done and not cloying, but it led to him helming The Internship, so who’s to say. The film is based on the book by Jonathan Trooper, and so it’s possible there’s something deeper going on in the film that a trailer can get across. Stories about family have a certain appeal, though not too much appeal when Jane Fonda plays a sass-mouthed grannie with fake boobs. Here’s that trailer:
The above image is striking because a shot of people laying on ice seems like one of those things you’d want to stay away from as a filmmaker because it’s inextricably linked to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Heck, it was one of the key images used in selling that movie. So borrowing the same shot seems sort of lazy and stupid, right? But how could all these talented people make dreck? Perhaps we’ll be pleasantly surprised when this hits theaters September 12.
