In what will come as a surprise to absolutely no one who was paying attention, Channing Tatum has now been confirmed to play the fan-favorite mutant Gambit in an upcoming X-Men film, something that had been rumored to be happening for about a year now.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner let the information slip at a recent X-Men: Days of Future Past event.  When asked about Gambit, she simply responded with “It’s Channing.  Yes.”

Donner then elaborated:

Well, he’s a rogue, Channing, he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that. And he’s got a really good heart, because I know him personally, I did a movie [2006's She's the Man] with him. So I think he’ll be great. He’ll be great for Gambit. And he’s a Southerner, too. He’s not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner, he understands that world. And you know Gambit loves New Orleans.

As /Film notes, Tatum will likely first appear as Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse.  You can then expect to see him in his own series of spin-offs—something the X-Men producers will likely lean heavily upon, now that Hugh Jackman is wanting to retire the Wolverine films.
