Big news in the world of Marvel’s television universe—Marvel’s Agent Carter, a proposed series starring Captain America: The First Avenger’s Hayley Atwell as the titular agent, has been given a full series order by ABC. It’s a big move for Marvel, as it’s a series that puts a female hero front and center, and one that isn’t decked out in spandex or a cape. The series will take place in the 1940s, after the events of The First Avenger, and will likely show Agent Carter and S.H.I.E.L.D. bumping up against Hydra in the beginnings of the Cold War.
Elsewhere, and speaking of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. somehow managed to get a second season, despite a fairly bland and mediocre first season. That said (spoilers!), the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (S.H.I.E.L.D. is more or less revealed to be so infiltrated by Hydra agents that the organization is essentially an arm of Hydra itself) gave the series a nice kick in the ass in the last few episodes, so it’s possible that a season two of the series will find it revitalized with new purpose. Or it will simply remain a tepid TV series that diehards watch in-between the releases of the much better Marvel films.
