Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has a title so long it will be impressive if any theater that shows it can fit it on their marquee. the film has released a trailer that suggests it will have things that could make it charming, but also elements that make it look like the worst kind of Disney kids film. It could go either way.
The film stars Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner and Donald Glover in this adaptation of the Judith Viorst and Ray Cruz kids book, and the leads look likeable enough, while the behind the scenes talent includes Miguel Arteta as the director (best known for The Good Girl and Cedar Rapids) and with a script by Lisa Cholodenko (who wrote and directed The Kids are All Right). Either this is the most artsy Disney film ever made or one of the biggest sell out films ever. Here’s that trailer:
It could also be that these people are trying to work in a system, but aren’t respected and their attempts at making a smart kids film get subsumed by the need to have a computer generated kangaroo kick Steve Carell out of frame. Even if this trailer doesn’t float anyone’s boat, it’s the sort of film that’s worth keeping an eye on just because of the talent involved. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day opens in theaters October 10.
