Today brings The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to the big screen, and though the film has been trashed by much of the geek community, it’s on track to open to huge numbers. Sony, infinite in their wisdom, are already plotting two spin-offs and at least two more sequels, but though star Andrew Garfield has said that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be his last, the producers don’t plan to move on from Peter Parker.

Talking to The Playlist, the interviewer brought up the alternate Spider-Men Miles Morales, Ben Reilly, and Miguel O’Hara, to which the producers said they would never use. As producer Avi Arad said:

The one thing you cannot do, when you have a phenomena that has stood the test of time, you have to be true to the real character inside – who is Peter Parker? What are the biggest effects on his life? Then you can draw in time, and you can consider today’s world in many ways. But to have multiple ones… I don’t know if you remember, but Marvel tried it. And it was almost the end of Spider-Man.

Okay, so what that suggests is that actor could be any color, but he will always stay a Peter Parker, though the last name is of English origin, which makes it sound Caucasian.

Then again, if the buzz that’s been building on this film holds, it means that by the time the next Spider-Movie comes out, audiences could be very wary of showing up. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is looking to open around $90 Million for the three day — though some are predicting higher — but if the film fails to cross the $200 Million mark domestically, it’s going to cause some problems, and if the film can’t top $750 Million worldwide, it’s going to be hard to justify a sequel without going on an apology tour. On top of which, the studio has already dated The Amazing Spider-Man 4, which both Garfield and series director Marc Webb have said they won’t do (which may be a way for them to get more money, but still). Basically, all evidence suggests that this house they’re trying to build isn’t all that sturdy.
