Michael Bay produced the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, though it’s hard to say how much input he had as he was off making Transformers: Age of Extinction. The film stars Megan Fox and William Fichtner, and now there’s a longer trailer with the best look yet at the mutant ninja turtles.
Though this seemingly builds on the previously released trailer, it shows how Fichtner’s Shredder character actually helped create the foursome of badass turtles, and the film’s sense of playfulness is visible, even if the trailer seems a little dark for what should essentially be a kids movie. But maybe it’s not: though kids will surely show up and enjoy themselves, it seems this is as much for them as for anyone under forty who grew up with these characters. They’ve been around since 1984, so there’s a number of generations who love the TMNT. Here’s that trailer:
My reaction: Total and complete ambivalence. I saw the first movie when it hit theaters in 1990, and was a fan of the characters (my favorite was Donatello, because of his Bo staff), but I don’t have a lot of nostalgia for them, and this looks like it will be a noisy summer movie that’s about nothing more than the technique it takes to motion capture performers and turn them into turtle things. There is no there there. But it could be fun to watch when it hits theaters August 8.
Do you love the Turtles?
