Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon pulled a Beyonce last night and surprised the internet by releasing a feature-length film online. The film, titled In Your Eyes, premiered Sunday at Tribeca Film Festival. After the screening, Whedon announced that the film would immediately be available online to download for $5.

Starring Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David, In Your Eyes was directed by Brin Hill, and written and produced by Whedon. In the film, Kazan plays Rebecca, the wife of a successful East Coast doctor who spends her life at cocktail parties. David plays Dylan, a charismatic ex-con who is struggling to find his footing and a fresh start in New Mexico. Eventually these two discover that they share an inexplicable connection and a unique metaphysical romance begins. Here’s a clip of Whedon announcing the release of the film, as seen at Tribeca, followed by a trailer (which is actually the first few minutes of the film):

Though the film looks quite interesting, it’s the new form of distribution that’s the real story here. In Your Eyes is being distributed by Bellwether Pictures, which was founded by Whedon and Kai Cole. The micro-studio is said to be committed to quality independent films and uses modern tools of distribution to bring these films to the right audience. Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing was the studio’s first film, but In Your Eyes marks yet another new and exciting way of distribution for them.

In a press release, Cole said, “It was always the plan to release In Your Eyes in a new and exciting way. It’s no secret that the distribution landscape is shifting rapidly and there are tools at our disposal as filmmakers that we could only dream about ten years ago.”

What do you think of Whedon’s new form of distribution? What did you think of the trailer?
