With no Pixar films around this year (strange, isn’t it), the biggest animated film of the summer is easily How to Train Your Dragon 2. The much anticipated sequel to the surprise hit of 2010, Dragon 2 is approaching the runway for takeoff as it comes out in a little over six weeks. Now the film has released its first five minutes online, and — guess what — it features quite a few dragons.
Considering the lack of other strong animated films, and the love people have for the first film, it’s possible that How to Train Your Dragon 2 could be one of the biggest films of the summer, and of 2014. But that’s partly because Disney’s coming off of Frozen, and Pixar had problems getting The Good Dinosaur to come together, so the summer has no other great must-see for the kids. Anyway, here’s that Dragon 2 opening:
2014 is a weird summer in general as it feels like an off year. If Universal had gotten their stuff together, we would have Jurassic World this year, but the script wasn’t ready (though that should start shooting soon), and it feels like 2014 doesn’t have an event film. Maybe it’s because 2015 became the battleground: everyone was anticipating it would have The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman Vs. Superman and Star Wars: Episode VII within weeks of each other, though two of those pictures moved away from next summer. While the Marvel movie of this summer is Guardians of the Galaxy, and neither The Amazing Spider-Man 2 nor X-Men: Days of Future Past has that crazy want-to-see oomph. The biggest picture of the summer may be Transformers: Age of Extinction, and who’s really excited about that? Which may cause How to Train Your Dragon 2, which opens June 13, to become one of the biggest hits of the summer.
