One of the biggest question marks this summer is Maleficent, which stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley, as it seems like a Vanity Fair pictorial come to life. Then again, Disney (who’s releasing this one) had great success with Alice in Wonderland, so it’s possible this could be a surprise hit when it opens next month. Now there’s a new featurette on the film.
And going by this, we’re still not sold yet on the film’s possible qualities. Sure, Jolie looks perfect as the wicked witch, but we’re not sure what to make of this re-imagining. Will it take its playbook from Wicked, and tell us that Maleficent is not the bad character so shown in previous iterations, and that possibly the King (Copley) is actually the bad guy? Or will it let Jolie vamp it up as the evil character that we know (and some love for her wickedness)? We shall see. Here’s that featurette:
This follows both Alice, Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror in offering new takes on these classic stories (or perhaps it’s fairer to say classic Disney cartoons), which is a subgenre that has offered both hits and misses. In the film’s favor, it’s one of the few movies to be released in the next couples months that’s a blockbuster starring a woman. Maleficent opens May 30.
Are you looking forward to Maleficent?
