Look, at $139 million so far, Divergent hasn’t done too badly. But still seeing how it’s yet another film adaptation of a Young Adult novel franchise, which has basically become the second-most lucrative blockbuster franchise genre after comic book films, $139 million isn’t exactly Twilight, Harry Potter, or The Hunger Games money. And yet Lionsgate is going to keep aping the Young Adult movie business model, and will take the final film in the Divergent franchise and split it into two movies. Because money. More money.
Or, as Lionsgate put it in a statement: “The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight Breaking Dawn films and about which we’re tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise.”
So, following the fairly mediocre Divergent adaptation will come its sequel, Insurgent, followed by two Allegiant films—Allegiant Part 1 on March 18, 2016 and Allegiant Part 2 on March 24, 2017.
So we now live in a world that will have four Divergent films. Four Divergent films. Four.
What do you think of the Divergent franchise news?
