How to Train Your Dragon marked the moment that DreamWorks proved that they weren’t just going to make pop culture-centric, in your face nonsense (like that movie that rhymes with dreck), so we’re cautiously optimistic about the sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2 — though we wish it had a better title. The new trailer for the film suggests that it could be just as good as the first film.
There’s new stakes (war!), new characters — with Cate Blanchett and Kit Harrington showing up — and more dragons, but also Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, and all of the supporting cast (which includes Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, and TJ Miller) from the first film. Even though a number of the performers’ stocks have risen since the first film, doing voice work on a film like this is ridiculously easy and often offers a nice little payday so it’s no surprise they got everyone back. Here’s that trailer:
Dragon, like Kung Fu Panda, seemed to spell a new chapter for the animation company, but they’re also coming off a couple of the biggest bombs of their career, with both Rise of the Guardians and Turbo flopping, which may have led them to make more sequels. Some of these bombs may have been caused by the studio’s move from Paramount to Fox, regardless the studio needs to deliver a hit. Perhaps they’ll have one when this film hits theaters June 13.
