We’ve been pretty lukewarm about Sony’s plan for an expanded Spider-Man film universe that includes a Sinister Six villain team-up film, mostly because The Amazing Spider-Man was as mediocre as could be, and Sony’s desperate, flopsweat-drenched marketing campaign for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn’t inspire much hope, either. Plus, it’s a movie about a bunch of villains teaming up and being the focus of the storyline, which has never been tried in a comic book film before.
However, the fact that Drew Goddard (co-writer and director of The Cabin in the Woods, and who also wrote a handful of Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes as well as Cloverfield) was set to write the film gave us a little hope. And now that cautious optimism has increased, as Goddard has signed on to direct as well.
If there’s one thing Goddard knows, it subverting genre conventions and clichés to come up with something new and fresh—if there was any writer/director who could make a superhero movie with no superheroes and only supervillains, it’d be Goddard. Still no word on which specific villains will anchor the film, but at this point, we know the current Spidey film universe has introduced the Lizard, Green Goblin, Rhino, and Electro, with brief Easter egg hints of Doctor Octopus and Vulture, and a confirmed Venom film on the way.
Which villains would you like to see in Sinister Six?
