When Jon Favreau decided to make a “back to his roots” indie movie, he didn’t think that he should do so without his friends, and so Chef has a cast that includes his Iron Man 2 stars Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr., alongside Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Dustin Hoffman and Oliver Platt. Frankly the only person we’re surprised doesn’t show up is Vince Vaughn.

The first trailer has arrived and it looks pretty formulaic, to be honest. Favreau is a chef who gets a bad review that ruins his career, either because he compromised his vision, or because he deviated too far from the established routine. It looks like then he is gifted a taco truck, and he re-energizes himself by doing what he loves while being in control. Which sounds like a metaphor for this movie in regards to Favreau’s career. Perhaps he realized that Cowboys and Aliens is garbage too? Oh, and there’s a kid. Here’s that trailer:

It’s hard not to be impressed with this cast, though we’re guessing many of the biggest names show up for a handful of scenes. The movie looks like it could be charming, but it also looks like it’s going to be follow the “triumph of the talented underdog” formula fairly closely. The film did play well at SXSW, so there’s that. Chef hits theaters May 9.
