It’s hard to know what to make of The Expendables franchise at this point—the first film, while it had its moments, felt a lot like the nondescript straight-to-VHS ‘80s films that it was trying to rise above; the second film felt more like what the first film wanted to be, i.e., an pretty stellar and satisfying men (and woman)-on-a-mission flick; advertisements for the third film, however, almost have the feel of knowing self-parody. How else to explain the bloated cast, and the attempts to sell Kelsey Grammer as some kind of action badass?
Case in point, the latest trailer for The Expendables 3, which makes a gag out of how goddamn overloaded the film is with both classic action stars, modern marquee names, and then a bunch of “who the hell is that?” at the end. Check it out:
The Expendables 3 stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Kelsey Graammer, Kellen Lutz, Ronda Roussey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen Powell. Directed by Patrick Hughes, it is set for an August 15 release date.
