Richard “Cheech” Marin and Thomas Chong met in the late 60′s, date undetermined, and have been performing together professionally since at least 1971. Which means they’ve been together for over forty years, and could be nearing the half-century mark of their partnership (which has had its ups and downs). And as the patron saints of stoners, their popularity has never waned. Which explains why we could see a new Cheech and Chong film in the near future.
Tommy Chong talked to Celeb Stoner, and told them that Super Troopers director Jay Chandrasekhar is the man for the job. Chong said “He’s working a script right now for us. It looks really funny. It’s about us going to a festival called the Burning Joint. All sorts of shenanigans happen. We could start shooting this summer.”
On one hand, there’s something to be said for a new Cheech and Chong film. Marijuana is no longer demonized the way it used to be, and is legal, or available legally to people who need it for “medicinal purposes” in many locations throughout America. There are also old stoners now, and there are jokes to be mined from Cheech and Chong actually needing the drug at their age, though it’s unlikely either would have glaucoma. Then again, it could be a feature length embarrassment of watching men who can collect social security trying to do similar jokes to the kinds they made over forty years ago. The duo were often uncontrollable ids who were desperate to get laid. At their age, it might take a different kind of drug for that to happen. If things go well, as Chong says, it could start shooting this summer, but either this gets a reasonable budget and a studio deigns to release it, or it gets chump change and hits VOD. Hard to say.
Did you watch/listen to Cheech and Chong growing up? Are you still a fan?
