How I Met Your Mother-Gary Blauman-Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, Taran Killam, Neil Patrick Harris, and Billy Zabka

How I Met Your Mother  has a host of small characters with far-reaching roles. “Gary Blauman” may not be someone you readily recognize, but you’ve seen him before. Everyone has to say goodbye on HIMYM but some don’t always do it the right way.

Episode Title: “Gary Blauman”

The gang goes crazy when Gary Blauman shows up minutes before the wedding.

The Good:

  • Flashback First Date: Last fall our biggest worry about this season was the wedding weekend format. Nevermind the fact that we stopped caring about the nuptials themselves. How would we get to see Ted’s real love blossom? We should have expected it thanks to the series’ occasional jump into the future. This week, the writers focused on Ted’s first date with The Mother. The chemistry between them is so sweet that we’d take any chance to see them together. Their date was an old faithful for any New York City based-sitcom. It was a walk and talk around the city. Seeing a slice of their burgeoning happiness makes the past nine seasons worth it.
  • Happily Ever After for All: In case you were wondering about the future of a few infamous characters, they took care of that. Carl still works his pub MacLaren’s with the help of his young son—child labor and liquor laws be damned. Crazy Jeanette was sentenced to counseling, and like Robin, she got a boyfriend out of the deal. Therapist Kevin, played by Kal Penn, still hasn’t learned not to date his patients. Ranjeet stock traded his way into owning the limo company and Patrice has a morning radio show just so Robin can call in and scream at her. William Zabka gets an award for poetry that doesn’t have “Worst” in the title while Zoe is still trumping for whatever cause she can find. Scooter marries Lily’s Eastern European stripper Doppelganger Jasmine, because of course. Jorge Garcia briefly reprises his role as the Blitz to prove he will always be the guy who leaves the party too early. Sandy Rivers is sexually harassing co-anchors in Russia, and James wins his family back. Oh and Blah Blah’s name was Carol.

The Bad:

  • Blauman: Taran Killam has been wallowing in the background of HIMYM since “Life Among the Gorillas” in season one. Killamn’s been a fixture at Goliath National Bank from the start, probably most famous for his downfall in “The Chain of Screaming.” How odd for them to wait until the second-to-last episode to reveal he had a weird part in the gang’s life. Had they picked a plot and stuck with it, the Blauman story might have been successful. But what started as a story about making the bride happy ended up spotlighting what a polarizing individual Blauman was. Half the gang loved him, the other half hated him, and we couldn’t care less. No matter that he saved Lily from getting a Sugar Ray Leonard tattoo, though we did take issue with his curly fry stealing. We’d rather they spent time reminding us of all Gary’s troubles at GNB. Otherwise people hardly remember who he is.

“Gary Blauman” was a bitter note to hit so close to the end of this swan song. We’d hate to think they’d waste any more time getting it wrong. No matter how small the character, they all deserve a proper send off. If anything, we deserve to say goodbye the right way.
