Despite the outcry of fans, pleading with the powers-that-be to bury this remake into the depths of Hades, Point Break is still being made. There’s been further casting going on with the picture, and the person that they wrangled in to play Johnny Utah, formerly played by Keanu Reeves, isn’t a name many movie-goers would recognize.
Luke Bracey is an up-and-coming actor whom many of you have seen in G.I. Joe: Retaliation as Cobra Commander, and that’s about it. He’s got a big slate of films that will be coming out within the next couple of years, but we’re not entirely sure how he really is as an actor. To see a newcomer like Bracey grab the role of Johnny Utah will be interesting, only just to see how he fares sharing the big screen with Gerard Butler in the role of Bodhi, formerly played by Patrick Swayze.
There hasn’t been too much talk on the Point Break remake other than our lead actors. Ericson Core is set to direct, and the only feature film that he’s got under his belt so far is the 2006 football movie Invincible. The filmmaker has made his living as a cinematographer, so I imagine that a number of Point Break fans are going to look at him with judging eyes as he pieces together this remake. No word on when they’ll begin filming, but if it was my guess, it’ll be taking place during the second half of the year.
