Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy trailer feels confident, which is a good thing. Though Marvel may have been taking risks by introducing second and third-tier characters like Thor, this is easily their hardest sell, because the material feels pretty out-there, and yet this trailer comes across as cocky and confident.

The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and (vocally at least) Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as the titular Guardians, who seem more like screw-ups than badasses, and we also get a look at the film’s great supporting cast, which includes John C. Reilly, Peter Serafinowicz, Karen Gillan (under a lot of make-up), Djimon Hounsou and Benicio Del Toro. There’s definitely a scale and a sense of humor to the proceedings, check it out:

There are a couple of things that make us a little hesitant about the film. The trailer opens with a sequence that seems straight stolen from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and then later in the trailer the song “Hooked on a Feeling” is used, which is inexorably linked with Quentin Tarantino‘s Reservoir Dogs. There’s definitely scale here, and a sense of humor, and perhaps they’re playing on familiar elements for audiences to get into a weird wild world, but we’re a little sick of movies that seem to be little more than redressings of films we already love and own on Blu-ray. But we’ll see when the film hits theaters August 1.
