Perhaps the biggest complaint from fanboys about the delightful Iron Man 3 was that Ben Kingsley‘s character The Mandarin was not given as much respect as he was shown in the comic books. Spoiler: In IM3 Kingsley was actually Trevor Slattery, an actor hired to act as the face of someone else’s wrongdoing. But in the new Marvel One Shot All Hail the King, that idea gets explored in a way that should make fans happy.
But not so much in this clip where Kingsley’s Slattery is in prison and threatened by some but revered by others. As to be expected from a short that features Kingsley’s character, there’s a lot of comedy here as Slattery was revealed to be quite a ham.
This short will be available with the Blu-ray release of Thor: The Dark World, though much of that film’s supplemental material has leaked online already. What writer Drew Pearce does in All Hail the King is expand on both the characters of Trevor Slattery and of The Mandarin in a way that works. The first two Iron Man movies teased that the character was real, but as the character has some awkward racial connotations, it made sense for Shane Black to treat the character the way he did. Perhaps this short will help (re)introduce The Mandarin as a viable character for future Iron Man episodes. We shall see.
