Fans of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff character in The Avengers and Iron Man 2 (just kidding, there’s nothing to like about Iron Man 2) have at least two good reasons to look forward the future—the character’s backstory and arc will be widely expanded with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Following that, the character may even get her own stand-alone film.

The character, who, along with Hawkeye, got overshadowed by the presence of Cap, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk in the first Avengers film, will have an increased presence in the upcoming wave of Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two films, according to Marvel honcho Kevin Feige:

“Black Widow’s whole arc [in The Winter Soldier] is coming to terms with her history – that she’s been a spy, and spies aren’t necessarily trustworthy.

“We start filming the next Avengers film at the end of March… [Black] Widow’s part in that is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”

It would be interesting to a see a Black Widow stand-alone film, as it has potential to be a straight-up spy franchise that focuses on the grittier elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and not just capes, mullets and big green guys that make things go boom-boom.
