Where most of the big Marvel movies of late have focused on their superheroes (to great effect), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 seems dominated by its supervillains. With the latest trailer for the film, we see the origin story of Jamie Foxx‘s Electro, and how he came to hate Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man and team up with the Osborn family.
In this extended trailer, we do get a sense of Parker’s home life with Aunt May (Sally Field) and his relationship with girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), but Electro and his turn from nerd and loser into a superpowered pain in the webslinger’s backside is given a big focus, as we also get to spend some time with Norman (Chris Cooper) and Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), who have plans for Peter Parker, and may know of his secret identity. Here’s the extended trailer:

There’s also a taste of Spidey’s battle with Paul Giamatti‘s Rhino, and the full trailer is named “Enemies Unite,” which means they’re selling the difference between this franchise and other superhero movies by focusing on the villains. That doesn’t mean the film will be so unbalanced, but we’re curious to see if Spidey remains the focus of the story (as he should be). This would be an easier sell to us if we liked the first film, which — in rebooting the franchise — ended up covering way too much familiar territory. Now that the basic set up is out of the way, we’re hoping this finds its own way. We’ll see if this delivers when it hits theaters May 2.
