A Million Ways to Die in the West

Give Seth MacFarlane credit, when you watch the first Red Band, NSFW trailer for A Million Ways to Die in the West, his new western comedy, you probably aren’t going to think of Blazing Saddles or Destry Rides Again (or The Villian etc.). It’s definitely a Seth MacFarlane movie first, and a western second.

And in that trailer, you get to see MacFarlane’s wit as it worked in Ted — and as it does on Family Guy — though because it’s set in the nineteenth century, perhaps there will be less pop culture references (but we doubt it). That style means a lot of repeated punchlines and some filthy jokes, some of which elicit laughs. That said, MacFarlane’s always struck us as a “batting average” comic where the volume means they’ll be some jokes that flat out miss. Here’s that Red Band, NSFW trailer:

Here MacFarlane is joined by Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson(s), Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris, and Sarah Silverman in this rambunctious-looking comedy that shows that when you deliver a comedy that makes over $200 Million at the box office, you can star in a movie while surrounded by amazing talent. And that’s (sort of) what this movie is about: turning Seth MacFarlane from voice actor and behind the scenes wizard into a movie star. We’ll find out if it works May 30.
