We tend to hate on Hollywood studios because of the movie projects they choose to fund (Transformers 4, anyone?). So much of typical Hollywood product tends to be huge, expensive spectacles with little-to-no story, heavy special effects and poor acting. So, we at ScreenCrave have decided to help jump behind the indie film. Below you’ll find some of the best indie trailers of the week, plus unknown projects featured on sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo that need your help to get made. Check out this week’s picks below.

  • FADING GIGOLO: John Turturro‘s Fading Gigolo has one hell of a cast and an interesting plot-line. Starring Turtorru and Woody Allen, the film tells the story of two best friends who decide to go into the gigolo business together, but eventually gain the unwanted attention of the Hasidic Jewish community they live in. The rest of the cast includes the likes of Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara and Vanessa Paradis. Vergara, in particular, drops her goofy Modern Family persona and goes for a more serious tone. She’s the most striking person in the trailer, if you ask us (but Allen and Turturro are pretty great too). The movie is set to hit theaters on April 18. The trailer makes the film look quite enjoyable. Check it out:

  • MEMPHIS: Memphis will make its debut at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival this week. Directed by Brooklyn filmmaker Tim Sutton, Memphis follows Ezra Jack, a strange singer (played by Willis Earl Beal) as he drifts through Memphis, surrounded by beautiful women, legendary musicians, a stone-cold hustler, a righteous preacher and a wolf pack of kids. Based on the official synopsis from the Sundance website, it looks like this film is about this singer’s transformation, but we’re unsure if Jack is/was an actual person. The trailer is slow and poetic, filled with thoughtful advice and soul music. Check it out:

  • LOVE & AIR SEX: Directed by Bryan Poyser‘s, Love & Air Sex is rom-com about some twenty-somethings living in Austin. The film follows a young, brokenhearted guy named Stan, who goes to Austin to try to get the love of his life back. But with his friends talking off his ear about reasons why he and his ex-girlfriend shouldn’t be together, he soon realizes that his only shot at getting his girl back will depend on the famous Air Sex World Championships. The rom-com premiered at SXSW in 2013, and is now set to hit VOD on February 4, 2013. There will also be a theatrical release on February 7, 2014. Here’s the trailer:

Indie Fundraiser Pick of the Week:

  • BARSTOW: Shelby ThomasBarstow is inspired by her own personal experience with her grandparents. The film tells the story of Charlie, who discovers the whereabouts of her missing mother, and is later forced to hitch a ride to Barstow to ask her estranged deadbeat dad for help. The film will be shot on-location in the Mojave Desert, but in order for that to happen, the Barstow team needs your help. They need to cover a lot of costs, including housing, travel, equipment, and food. Head over to Kickstarter to find out  more information about this project.
