On How I Met Your Mother one thing will always reign supreme: the slap-bet. All these years later Marshall’s still cashing in with “Slapsgiving #3: Slappointment in Slapmarra.” Last night had everything—a tour of Barney’s more notable ex-girlfriends, new puns and a special serenading guest spot. Still, something important was missing from all the excitement.

Episode Title: “Slapsgiving #3: Slappointment in Slapmarra”
Marshall tells the story of his preparation for the next slap.
- A Slice of Slap Heaven: Carter Bays and Craig Thomas buried a gem at the tail end of the episode. While nursing his bruised face in the woods Boys II Men surrounded and serenaded Barney with a round of “You Just Got Slapped.” Call us an easy mark if you will, but who can resist a montage of all of Marshall and Barney’s slaps to date to the tune of soulful doo wop ballad? Lyrics like, “Everybody saw it how and everybody laughed and clapped because it was awesome, the way that you just got slapped,” will make this a chart topper forever. Can’t Boys II Men just sing the moral to every story please?
- The Slap of a Thousand/Million Exploding Suns: The continuation of the slap bet has long been anticipated, but maybe the hype got to the writers heads. It was nice for someone other than Barney to tell a ridiculous background story for once. Watching Barney scoff at Marshall’s tale of living in China for a year felt like payback enough. Giving the rest of the gang fantastical roles in his fake backstory was cool, as was the many ways they manipulated the word slap. The best pun of the night was Marshall’s tree-way with White Flower/Lily and the Slapping Tree of Gong Ching forest. Still, with the entire night shining a spotlight on the impending hit robbed the story of its allure. Here’s a hint, if teasing Barney is the protocol, it would be best to tease the audience too. Otherwise we’ll get tired of one of the best gags on the show and no one wants that.
“Slapsgiving #3: Slappointment in Slapmarra” wasn’t what we were expecting. It seems like the show’s solution to Marshall’s long separation is to overdose on Erikson now. We’d much rather see him fit into the fray, just as he did when we fell in love with the slap bet all those years ago. Thankfully, there’s one slap left and there’s no way Bays and Thomas will end the series without finishing the bet. Let’s hope this one’s a little more slaptastic.
How I Met Your Mother airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
