Star Wars: Episode VII should be shooting sometime in the near future, but J.J. Abrams and company have been so busy re-writing the film that there’s been no word about the cast, other than that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are likely to return. But now casting rumors are getting serious (and real), which means Michael Fassbender (among others) are in the running to join the film.
The Hollywood Reporter has surveyed the rumors, and besides Jesse Plemons, Fassbender, Hugo Weaving and Adam Driver are supposedly up to join the cast. Fassbender’s career heated up stateside after his role in Quentin Tarantino‘s Inglourious Basterds, and has enjoyed a partnership with Oscar frontrunner Steve McQueen, and Ridley Scott of late. Weaving has done a good job in collecting franchises as he appeared in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and in The Matrix films. Adam Driver broke through with his role on Girls, and is on the big screen now in Inside Llewyn Davis. All are maybe not A-list, but respected and talented actors.
THR is also reporting that the seventh Star Wars movie will focus mainly on Ford, Hamill and Fisher, with the subsequent films to focus more on their offspring. Perhaps there’s a master plan here, and it could be great, but having seen Harrison Ford phone it in a lot over the last couple years, it’s hard to say that this sounds like a good idea. Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters December 18, 2105.
