All good things come to an end, as the saying goes, and that includes television shows that were good, but never quite great—like Boardwalk Empire (sorry, but with its Sopranos and Scorsese pedigree, we’ve never understood how the show was never able to rise above the level of “yeah, it’s a pretty good show”). That’s right, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is coming to an end in 2014.
Boardwalk Empire tells the Prohibition-era story of Atlantic City gangster Nucky Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi.
The series’ fifth season is set to launch later this year, and will be the final season for the show. The news was announced by President of HBO Programming, Michael Lombardo, noting that “it has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages.”
Further, Winter had this to say about the decision to bring his Empire to an end: “After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”
