Much has been made of the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s utter cavalcade of villains (Electro, Rhino, at least one Green Goblin if not two, and a rumored Vulture cameo). And while recent advertising has made much of Jamie Foxx’s Electro, we haven’t seen much in the way of Rhino, or Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) as the Green Goblin, aside from the briefest of glimpses. Which is what makes DeHaan’s recent conversation with Digital Spy (via Collider) about the film so interesting.
First off, DeHaan offered a bit of backstory in terms of how Harry knows Peter Parker in this incarnation of the franchise, and how it ties back into Peter’s mysterious history/childhood:
“When you first meet Harry he’s just graduated from high school, and he has to come back to New York to help deal with Oscorp, and its legacy, and his father [Norman Osborn, played by Chris Cooper]. He also sees Peter Parker for the first time in a long time; they were childhood friends. So it’s really about Harry having a friendship with Peter and an allegiance to Peter, but also being the heir apparent to Oscorp, and having to deal with that.”
But you want to know more about the villains, right? DeHaan notes that just about all of the franchise villains seem to be erupting from Oscorp, and further indicates that Harry/Green Goblin needs something from both Peter Parker and Spider-Man:
“It’s becoming very obvious that all of these villains are originating from within Oscorp, in one way or the other. There are things that Harry feels he owes Peter, and things he needs from Peter, there are things he feels he needs from Spider-Man, and then there’s his responsibility to Oscorp. It’s a very complicated storyline, really cool and dynamic.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for a May 2, 2014 release date.
