Back in April of 2013, we reported to you that Point Break, the deliriously enjoyable 1990s action flick directed by Katheryn Bigelow and starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, is being getting the remake treatment and will be directed by Ericson Core (cinematographer on The Fast and The Furious) and written by Kurt Wimmer (the Total Recall remake), which isn’t exactly a pedigree that instills a lot of confidence. And in case that weren’t enough to make you nervous, try this on: Gerard Butler is now set to play the bank robbing Zen guru Bohdi, played to zonked out perfection in the original film by Swayze.
As we’ve noted previously, here’s why this won’t work: Point Break is an almost terminally stupid film that soars due to its well-framed action and, especially, its casting: by starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, two actors who seemed to have no idea how ridiculous the film is and thus who commit themselves totally to it, the film became a wildly over the top so-bad-it’s-good action flick, and one of the great superficial pleasures of ‘90s cinema. And Gerard Butler is, well…he’s Gerard Butler.
Further, while the original film was about how hotshot FBI agent Johnny Utah infiltrates a group of hardcore surfers who rob banks, the remake will be about extreme sports. Oh, this just gets better and better, doesn’t it?
What do you think of the Point Break remake news?
