In October of 2013, we reported to you that Ben Kingsley was filming some sort of “secret project” for Marvel, with rumors hinting that it was a Marvel One-Shot (a short, in-universe film that gets attached to a feature film Blu-Ray) in which “the real Mandarin” confronts Kingsley’s drunken Trevor Slattery (Spoilers: in Iron Man 3, Slattery is the public face of the terrorist known as the Mandarin, who is revealed at the end of the film to be Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian; there were rumors, however, that even Killian was yet another mask, and the real Mandarin has yet to be revealed.
Well, Marvel has now released the first wave of details concerning the secret project, which we now know to be called All Hail the King. In it, Slattery is in Seagate prison, and is giving an interview about his life, and the possibility of the Mandarin’s Ten Rings organization targeting him for retaliation.
Iron Man 3 and All Hail the King screenwriter Drew Pearce had this to say about the project:
“Imagine a real terrorist organization whose beliefs were long held and religious for thousands of years, and imagine a drunk, British actor coming along and essentially telling the world that he’s the face of your organization. I think they would be right to be quite angry.
“‘The Further Adventures of Trevor’ was something we had talked about on set all the time, and when we sat down to talk about what the short would be, it was Stephen [Broussard, executive producer of Iron Man 3] and Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] and myself and Joss Whedon and Jeremy Latcham [executive producer of The Avengers.] So we kicked around a bunch of ideas and there were loads of them that we liked, and it was actually Joss who at a certain point went like, ‘Or you could do the one that has Sir Ben Kingsley in it because you have access to Sir Ben Kingsley.’”
“By the end of the short, there are definitely a lot of exciting other places that are brought up in it that could then go in the Marvel universe. You know, whether that’s an Iron Man movie or another one going into Phase Two or Three.”
It’s that last statement that has our interest—one gets the feeling that All Hail the King is working to establish a “more real” Mandarin which will serve as the Big Bad for a future Iron Man or Avengers film.
All Hail the King will be included on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-Ray, which is set for a February 25th release date.
