2015 is already looking like a monster year in Blockbuster cinema, with The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman Vs. Superman (or whatever it’s officially titled, though it won’t be Man of Steel 2), Mad Max: Fury Road, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, Fantastic Four, Ted 2, Terminator: Salvation, Ant-Man and Star Wars: Episode 7 all scheduled to hit theaters that year. Now you can add Judd Apatow‘s Trainwreckto that pile of offerings.
The film stars hot comedienne Amy Schumer, and is now scheduled for release July 24, 2015. That means it will open a week after Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman but it’s not a Justice League movie, or maybe it is, and a week before Edgar Wright‘s Ant-Man and Tim Burton‘s Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars. And though it’s easy to note that it’s coming out in a crazy year, if the film is any good it could be a huge winner.
Every year needs variety, and though 2015 is clogged with big money titles, as we’ve seen this last summer and year, a good comedy can compete with any major blockbuster, and often has the best legs and return on investment. This summer The Heat came out at the end of June and made nearly $160 Million domestic, while Apatow’s previous summer hits include The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and (as producer) Bridesmaids. If the film delivers, it should be fine.
