Since most of the recent chatter concerning the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has revolved around the film’s rogues gallery, as well as the more than likely Sinister Six film that will follow The Amazing Spider-Man 3, it’s been easy to forget the role of Gwen Stacy in these films. Which is a shame, as Emma Stone’s performance as Stacy in the first film (and her chemistry with franchise lead Andrew Garfield) was just about the only thing worth watching; further, it has been intimated that Stacy will die—just as she did in the comics—either at the end of Amazing Spider-Man 2, or at some point in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
In a recent interview with Total Film, Stone didn’t drop a massive helping of spoilers, but she did indicate that Stacy wouldn’t be a “damsel in distress,” and that Stacy comes through for Spider-Man more than Spider-Man comes through for her:
“She saves him more than he saves her. She’s incredibly helpful to Spider-Man… He’s the muscle, she’s the brains…I don’t get to do too many crazy stunts. She gets herself in the middle of stuff, that’s for sure! I do get webbed to a car. There’s shit like that.”
Stone also added that she can only think of “one important instance” when Spider-Man actually comes to Gwen Stacy’s rescue in the film.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for a May 2, 2014 release date.
