Kevin Smith has been gabbing on about how he’ll retire shortly after he finally makes Clerks 3, but that’s not going to happen. Today he announced that he’s developing another movie called Helena Handbag that sounds like quite the monstrous project, which he hopes to make on a fairly low budget.
In a recent interview Kevin Smith let the cat out of the bag, informing the world that he’ll be making another movie shortly after Clerks 3. The funny part about this news is that Clerks 3 was supposed to be the filmmaker’s swan song as he faded out into retirement, but it appears as if Helena Handbag may take that place, especially since Clerks 3 is officially beginning production in May of 2014. But now I’m curious about what Helena Handbag is all about. Kevin Smith says a few words about his latest project:
“The idea is to, once again, take an episode of SModcast and turn it into a movie… [T]his time the plot of the movie concerns mankind teaming up with Hell to save existence from extinction at the hands of a Rapturing giant Jesus – which means the budget has to be LOW, because NOBODY’S gonna wanna make that movie. At all. And I know this going in, so I won’t be heartbroken if it never goes beyond the script. But… if the script is funny enough? Who knows?”
Even though Smith has made enemies with some members of the press in recent years, he still has a good number of connections and a strong fan base to lift this project off the ground. If he’s suddenly throwing another movie into the development fold, then that means we could easily see him make another couple more films before he officially retires. If I were him, I would denounce the retirement and just keep on making movies. It’s his passion after all, why try to stop it?
