Because it’s 2013, and humanity is on track to reboot every film property ever made, we have news that Paramount is now set to reboot it’s The Naked Gun franchise, the series of cop film spoofs anchored by the eternally goofy and straight-faced Leslie Nielson.  And who will be replacing Nielson?  Ed Helms, of The Office and The Hangover franchise.

The Naked Gun series began as a six-episode TV series in 1982, lampooning cop movie and TV show clichés before the Airplane! crew adapted the series into a trilogy of spoof films: The Naked Gun: From the Files of the Police Squad!, The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear, and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult.  Paramount had initially planned on a fourth film, straight to video, in 2009, but nothing came to fruition there.

Now, Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant will take a crack at restarting the franchise, now anchored by Helms.

This isn’t Helms’ first crack at rebooting a classic comedy franchise; the actor was originally set to star in New Line Cinema’s reboot of the Vacation series of films starring Chevy Chase.
